First time travelling with hand luggage only. Aer Lingus baggage allowance size is 50cm x 40cm x 24cm. I have a sports bag which is not rigid, a gym bag made of soft material it is 40cm x 26cm x 26cm would this be allowed as I can squeeze it into the overhead luggage bin on the plane.

Also is it possible to buy 100ml of shaving cream/gel and are disposable razor cartridges allowed in hand luggage.
    Thanks.

If you can squeeze the bag into their mould, you'll be fine, don't pack it too tight and you should be fine.

Regarding the shaving foam and blades, I'd say wait to buy it airside, if you can get it there, you're allowed bring it on.you'll be grand with the gel / cream, just not sure about the razor.

if I have one disposable blade cartridge (in the plastic mould that you get when you buy them) in my hand luggage and shaving foam in a clear bag can they still stop me with it.

You'll get the foam through no bother once its 100ml, but they might catch the razor and make you throw it out, in fact I'm pretty sure they defo won't allow the razor through.

Am pretty sure that disposable razor cartridges are ok. It's the bare blades themselves, on their own, in no protective casing, that are not allowed.

Disposable razor blades like Gillette fusion etc are fine in hand luggage

Disposable razors and the cartridges for Mach3 etc. razors are all fine. You can buy small cans of shaving gel in most shops, I wouldn't wait until I get to the airport because you'll probably pay much more.

Knivess and scissors are ok as long as the blade length doesn't exceed 6cm. In the case of a pair of scissors, the blade is measured only from the fulcrum (pivot point) to the tip of the blade which means that most small penknives such as the smaller models of Swiss Army knife on a keyring are ok.

I have this model and have brought it through security in my hand luggage several times in the past few years with no problems....

Old style two-sided razor blades are not allowed.

chiming in, safety razor blades are fine in hand luggage. I flew with some in my bag without any hassle. As coylemj said, only the bare blades are not allowed.
Glad to hear small pen-knives allowed through, we used to have to take it off the keyring and leave behind on short travels.
Small nail scissors are also allowed, as long as blade smaller than 6cm too. Must be same rule as with the knife blades.

Seems people are confusing the terminology/names of razor types.

Cartridge razors are razors with the blade inside a plastic guard and are allowed. Examples would be the likes of Mach 3/Sensor/Fusion by Gillette.

Safety razors or double edge razors are not allowed. Examples would be the likes of http://www.shaving.ie/products/50-Feather-Blades.html

Straight razors or cut-throat razors are not allowed.

No, the term 'safety razor' was coined to describe the razor which used the double-edged blade that our fathers and grandfathers used. To change the blade on the early models, you had to screw off the top which consisted of two metal layers in which the blade was sandwiched. Later models had a top that swivelled opened in two halves when you twisted a collar at the top of the handle as shown below.

It was described as a 'safety razor' because it was much safer to use than the old cut throat razor which it replaced since a slip of the hand was much less likely to inflict a cut because the blade was fully enclosed in the handpiece.

When you read on an airport website that 'razor blades' are prohibited in hand luggage, they're referring to the type of blade shown above. People who don't remember the older blades sometimes assume that the term includes modern razor cartridges like Mach3/Fusion etc. which it does not.
