    The reported speech is
"the fools, the fools, the fools! — they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves,"

Apparently the real story is that Pearse was almost overcome by a foul smell when making his speech and what he said was

"the farts, the farts, the farts - they will leave us for dead, hold your noses".

When the cub reporter reported this back to his boss who was editor in chief of a major newspaper, the boss changed it because it would be an insult to the Victorian prudery of that era.
