Comparing diesel and petrol consumption

Is it possible to compare as a rough guide?

I currently have a 1.6 petrol saloon, looking at a 2.1 diesel saloon.

What would equivalent consumption of 2.1 diesel be in a petrol engine? a 1.6, 1.8. 2.0?

    Thanks

    2.1? Merc or PSA?

Also depends on how it's driven and where

Could you not just look up manufacturers fuel consumption figures for your current car and whatever car you are looking at?

It's going to hugely depend on each individual car...

Do you really think that fuel consumption is linear to engine size?

As said, you have to find the reported mpg for the car you are looking at.
There isn't afaik any easy relation you can use to predict mpg based solely on engine size, at least not in a predictable way for all cars.
Various engine sizes will have different bhp, turbo or not, and be in various weights of cars.

www.fuelly.com/car/ is good as it reports actual customer's mpgs. There also plenty of other resources online.

Definitely the way to go. If you know what you get in you current car look it up first and see if where you fall on the range of results for your current car and driving style. So if you are on the average you will probably get the average for the other car.

You can't really compare engine size to engine size when comparing fuel consumption. A Mitsubishi Evo 9 is a 2 litre petrol engine that'll probably do around 20mpg, a Lexus GS450h is a 3.5 litre petrol engine with a hybrid system that'll do 47.9mpg in the latest model!
Given that your Mercedes is a 2009, it might be a Blue Efficiency engine. That'll get another 5mpg or so over the previous versions (in certain circumstances). What is it? C200? C220? E220?
    What was the 1998 car?
