Bit of a newb to this. I'm looking for a cycling computer that would record the usual things like average speed, kilometers, heart rate etc, but I'm also looking to upload the info on it to see how i'm improving in sections etc.

I dont really know where to start with it, my budget is around 150e. Any advice lads?

Ah never thought of that. I'm want something that i can keep an eye on my average speed and heart rate though. Makes it easier to push on a bit. I'm cycling about 45 km a day and want to increase average speed and all that.

You can get mounts for your phone (depending on phone obviously).

I use a Garmin Edge 500 - fairly expensive though. Not sure if you can get anything with good HR stuff built-in any cheaper.

Cheers, yeah, i dont have the budget for that. Snazzy bit of kit though.

I was just looking around myself and have seen this:

Now it doesnt seem have a USB port for uploading info. I'd like to be able to see the distance I've done on an ongoing cumulative basis but i think the strava app on the phone would cover that.

Just save up and wait until you have the budget for the Garmin (Plenty of deals online) or look at the new line with the Garmin 200 (Cheaper version of the 500).

My opinion would be use Strava on your phone for now and then eventually treat yourself to a garmin. The Garmin is just excellent and you will not regret it.

Have to add another positive for the Garmin Edge 500. I dont know how much they are now, but with the 510 out on the market now, surely the price has tumbled.

I paid over €300 for mine and was worth every cent.

Does everything you are looking for OP and a lot more besides

Have a look at Bryton as well. These are similar to the Garmin devices but a good bit cheaper. I got a Rider 50 (similar to the Edge 800) a while ago and I really like it.

The Rider 20 with HRM is about €175 on Wiggle.

You can get a Garmin Edge 200 for <€100 from Handtec or an Edge 500 for around the €200

for that money you are mad not to go with the Edge 500. Do yourself a huge favour and wait a while longer to save up the extra few quid. If you don't, you will regret it!

go for the 500 or the bryton.

the pennies you save will end up costing you if you get all into the lycra, power output and strava segments.

Thanks lads, my flat mate has the 500 as well and he's forever checking out his strava times. Think I'll have to gather a few more pennies and go for the 500. :D

Good decision. Strava is indeed excellent. I love comparing my times on different segments, and knowing a segment is coming up so do my level best to beat previous times!

The other excellent thing is the courses. Lets say you do a particular route quite often, for eg, cycling into work, you can load a previous trip onto your device and basically race against a virtual you!

What you do is, do the trip once, and in Garmin connect (the webpage you upload all you activities to) click on the icon to save it as a course. Then you export it back to your device... sounds weird, but it will go back in a different place as a course.

The next time you are doing that route, instead of just clicking start, go into courses and do the course instead.

This gives you an extra 2 screens on top of the 5 already there (presuming you already have the maximum 5 set up). These screens now give you information on your previous trip, tell you how far ahead or indeed behind (in both distance and time) you are, along with a map (ok, it's actually just a squiggly line) to show your route and where you are on it versus your virtual self.
