How many Cannabis plants can you have?

Hi,
One of my best friends and housemate is planning to grow some weed on a very small scale. ( Maximum 8 plants)
We are both native Dutch and we enjoy some smoke from time to time.
Weed is very expensive in Ireland, the quality isn't always good and most importantly we always have to go out and buy it from dogdy people. Which we ****ing hate....
We both know that it is illegal, but how illegal is it? Can you go to prison for 8 plants? In the beginning i was okay with having some plants (one or two) in my appartment but now i must say i m feeling paranoid as i m gonna be sharing with this person. He s already pimped up and ready to go (with this i mean he has bought a weed growing kit in the Netherlands and brought it over here driving).
He s not planning to sell any of the weed he says but i don t think the garda care about that...

How illegal is this actually in Ireland?
Should i look for another flat maybe safer...
I m having a job and all that
And i don t wanna get caugh,
I saw some helicopters in the past, flying over our flat looking for weed stake out i guess
Am i just paranoid ?

It is very illegal, it will defo be a charge of section 17 growing a section 3 possesion a section 15 possesion for sale or supply. I don't think 8 plants are worth more than €12k so doubt a 15(A) but if it is that carries a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years. Remember sale or supply does not mean selling only giving to friends for free is enough for a conviction.

First offence on the above anywhere from suspended sentence to 2 or 3 years.

Ok we have already decided not to do this. As you can get actual prison sentence for this this is way to risky...
Having a smoke in the weekend is not worth this...
Still it is very hypocrite as we all live in a country filled with Alcoholics and a drinking culture that kills tousands on a yearly basis...
Anybody interested in buying a grow kit ? Or is selling that one also illegal?

Both Ireland and the Netherlands (where I assume you are from) have exactly the same rate of death per 100,000 of the population related to alcohol at .9. So don't see how that is related to a more liberal drug law.

The Irish rate for drugs is 1.8 while the Netherlands is .1.
