Help Chainset / cassette Combo

    A little advice needed

I am about to change from a triple tiagra chainset (170mm), 9speed setup to a standard 105 double (172.5MM, 34 inside leg) 10 speed setup with the usual 53/39 rings, but I'm in two minds on a cassette. Do I go for a 12/27 or a 11/28. At the moment I'm inclined to lean towards 12/27 as it will have more gradual changes midway through the cassette, plus with a 53 up front I wont need the 11 gear...
The triple I currently use has 50/39/30 rings and I'm currently on a 11/23 cassette.

    Thanks in advance

You may not need the 11, but depending on where you do you're cycling, I'd say you might be glad of the 28, with the granny ring no longer available to you.

ratracer is right...go with the 12/28...safety in numbers when graduating to a double....less bullets to fire on the hills!!

    Do you mean the 12/27?

I think that's best. I did think of the compact but I think I'd end up with a standard chainset eventually. So standard chainset 53/39 with a 12/27 cassette.

    Thanks for the advice guys

I recently put a standard crank on my training bike with a 12/27 and even though I'm reasonably fit and not a bad climber I do find myself struggling a little on some of the steeper climbs on my regular routes! With the compact and an 11/25 I could spin up anything but now find myself having to push hard on really steep stuff! I'd be inclined to go for the 28 even though it will be a bit more "gappy"!

I think I'd sacrifice the extra tooth of the 28 for a 27 just to avoid the gappy cassette. I'd be using the mid range gears the most for most roads.
Going to order tomorrow, hope to have it fitted Wed. So new 105 double 10 sp levers, cassette, front mech, chain and chainset B-)
