Hi guys, new poster here. I was just wondering would I be laughed at if I bought Aero Bars for my Felt mountain bike? I don't wear cycling clothes or use any other special equipment but I was looking to use Aero bars to make life easier on some parts of the cycle.

I think you might get some double takes, but that's about it. Many many years ago, before I knew better or knew about road bikes, I commuted about 15k on an mountain bike. Aero cars made a big difference, different hand positions, and could get a more aero position. Most of my commute was off road so brakes weren't an issue. Might not be the best idea if cycling in a built up area/ traffic

There's really only one way to get aero on an MTB...

I saw a guy on a mtb with aero bars recently. It looks damn peculiar. If you don't mind being stared at go for it.

    Yes!

I would have thought that whatever advantages you gain would be outweighed by the handling disadvantages of Aero bars! Why not put bar ends on which would give you some extra options?

Back in the day, 1990, A mountain biker, named John Tomac, raced Down hill on this bike. Tomac was no slouch. He was second in the DH World Champs.
And he won The XC World cup. Not necessarily on this bike.
He raced it on non technical, open courses in the U.S.A.

So. Go for it. Whatever rocks your boat.

That would still work well today on some of the less technical XC courses (ideal for Lady Dixon in Belfast for example!) but they're drop rather than Aero bars!

The only aero bars you should put on an mtb are made by nestle.

Wow this has had more responses than I would've imagined it would have! Thanks for all the opinions, I think I will actually get them for my bike. Any suggestions to what ones I could get? Lower than €35 preferably but I could stretch to €50 if needs be. Thanks again

Just on that, if you are buying online be aware of the diameter of your bars and make sure the bars you buy will fit.

When I was a young fella I had them on my (Oh so heavy!!) mountain bike. I was only thinking about it recently and yeah it's a bit counter intuitive but if you're going to be cycling your mtb on the road they will undoubtedly make you more aero, which is the point.

I did a couple of long spins on my mtb back in the day including a 160k spin Cork to Dingle. The bars were certainly used that day.

Course ANY kind of a road bike with skinnier tires would've been a much better job but, there's a lot to be said for riding the bike that's in your shed too.

I don't believe someone would actually put aero bars on a mountain bike, but however I will humour you...!!

If you really need to find a more comfortable riding position, try out something like these: www.ergon-bike.com/us/en/product/gp5
