Google Keyboard - now in the PlayStore

I just noticed that Google have released Google Nexus stock keyboard as 'Google Keyboard' in the play store.

Gave it a try on my HTC One and it's pretty excellent. The predictions and the swiping action is much better than either the HTC keyboard or SwiftKey!

It's worth a try if you're looking for an alternative keyboard.

Available for anything with Android 4.0 or above installed.

Its part of Google's Strategy, to split the Android OS into as Many Apps as possible.

They've done it for Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Calendar and Search. They'll most likely continue doing it too.

Under the old method , if they found a bug in the keyboard, they wouldn't update the entire OS for that one bug. They'd group a number of them together and release Android X.X.1

Now they can just update the app. Simples

Also it has added benefits for people who don't own a nexus device. As they can bypass Manufactured Versions of the OS (i.e. TouchWiz and Sense)

I think if I'm going for another Android in the future, I'm just going to get a Nexus device. I don't see the point of Sense and TouchWiz. I just want the latest glitch fixes a.s.a.p. and stock Android looks pretty slick these days compared to a lot of the customisations.

HTC Sense used to be an advantage, but I'm not sure anymore. I found BlinkFeed a bit annoying and ended up using a different launcher.

I'm on Three and we seem to get all the Android updates really late. Meteor seems fast enough, but I think that's because they don't really customise their phones much. Where as Three seems to have more issues with things like locking out 2G options and stuff like that.

I'd much rather just have an up-to-date device.

The HTC One or Galaxy S4 Google Edition would really be a nice job. Hopefully, I'll be able to flash my HTC One with that firmware when it appears :)

Probably does, but I need an afternoon to sit down and do it and the weather's just too nice right now :) I'll wait until some miserably wet saturday :D

It also seems like a discreet way of bringing their vision of Android within reach of most users. I wouldn't be surprised if they started adding more stock apps the store and eventually the Launcher.

Just one little niggle, at least on the S3...

there is a bug which causes the phone to reboot, if there are more than 20+ entries in the clipboard...

spontaneous reboots, documented in my previous posts.......

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=85112161&postcount=1

but, with the Samsung Kb there is an option to clear the clipboard of entries, which I sometimes forget, until my phone reboots!!!

Is there a facility to do this, clear the clipboard, included with the Google Kb...??

    I don't see it!!

Swype have to have the worst business plan ever. They produce a really useful, innovative program, make it free but not available in the market, depending on word of mouth and users jumping through hoops to install it. Then they finally make it available in the market but not until after Swiftkey have brought out Flow. Finally, they start charging for it just as Google bring theirs to the market for free...

I've installed Google keyboard on all devices in the house now.
