this is probably the most controversial issue in the whole star wars saga. one that keeps on cropping up every so often.and from what i've seen and read it's totally divided fans all over the world.
    so the question is.
who in your opinion is the true face of darth vader/ anakin skywalker and why.
    is it
    A: Sebastian Shaw
    or
    B: Hayden Christensen.
to me it has to be sebastian shaw. my view is so strong on this issue that i can only call it sacrilege as to what lucas did when he removed the broken old man who redeemed himself in the end of R.O.J. again my view is that strong i'll only watch the old issues where the great Mr. Shaw is in the ending as lukes father. there is and can only be one face for me.
it's wrong ,wrong, wrong to have christensen there.
i've inserted an image below as a reference.

Shaw was the one I saw when the movie first came out. He's also the one on the dvd copy I have but never watch. Of the new 3, episode one was the only one I saw. I didn't bother with the others so, I'd have to say, in all seriousness, that I don't care!

Episodes 1-3 is for the kids. Just as 4-6 were when they were released.

I could only see this poll going one way,

It has to be Shaw. The fact that you never saw the "real" Anakin till that moment made it all the better for me. I have know idea what Lucas was thinking with that one.

    Good question though.

Obi wan appears as an old spirit, why shouldn't Vader.
there was absolutely no need for them to "Re-master"
the old films it adds absolutely nothing but random
poorly CGI'd animals into background shots and annoying
    nostalgia killing things like this

To play Devils Advocate here for just a sec, maybe he appeared as his younger self as that's how he last looked as a Jedi, & how he last looked while not on the Dark Side?

To be honest though, Shaw, every time.

    That is a fair point...

It has to be Shaw. I love the movies, and although wasn't happy with episodes 1-3, I'll accept them. But I can only hope the next episodes in the series bring the magic that was missed, because to me episodes 4-6 are cinema magic, every time I watch them, I become 8 years old again.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

I agree there's a lot of factors to contest but equally you could say vader stopped being Dark Side when he said "noooo" to the emperor and threw him down the chute. Theres a lot of redemption in vader in the minutes leading to his death.

Only way to do that is time machine I'm afraid...

I haven't regularly watched 4-6 in years. But they do bring me back! For me, it's about more than the movies though. It's about a simpler time. It's about having to wait till Xmas every year, hoping at least one of the four channels would show at least one of the three movies. It's about remembering saving pocket money for action figures.

It's about the memory of the movies, not so much the movies themselves. If I were to watch them now for the first time, I'm not sure I'd like them. As movies (and yes, I know they were groundbreaking etc) well, they're really not all that good. The memory beats the reality.

Very true, Anakin ceased being Vader as soon as he decided to help Luke & kill the Emperor really. Kinda kills that theory really :o

My personal theory is that lucasfilm, in wanting to make the six films a saga, tried to have as many tie-ins as possible from episodes 1-3 to 4-6. Possibly to make them more salable as a group for the dvd and blu-ray releases.

They'll always be two separate trilogy's to me and I recon most of the fans. In my opinion they severely underestimated and undervalued how good the original movies were in their original cut.

I think thats essentially it yeah, in Lucas's mind it just helps tie the two trilogies together. In reality though, it's not a welcome change really.

luckily it has one way ziedth. views dont seen to be divided here as other places. obi wan once said about vader " he's more machine now than man". so would it have been wise to put in a cyborg as a shimmering ghost ,or maybe use the burnt scarred figure of anakin as seen towards the end of R.T.O.S. who knows. but according to other posts elsewhere it seems the reason behind using christensen is because thats what anakin looked like before he turned to the dark side.
all i can say is i'm proud to be of the generation where sebastian shaw was the true face of vader.
plus if you compare the two anakin's.
shaw looks the part in that he's a happy old man who seems proud to have redeemed himself and become one with the good side of the force again.
    whereas
christensen looks like he's waiting to do yoda and obi wan over again. i'm almost waiting for his lightsabre to cut them down. he still has the same look he had just before he turned to the dark side.

with lucas it seems to be all about the franchise. tweek something , re-release it and it sells which he has done on numerous occasions or make a movie then years later come back to it saying i dont like it that way and change it.

The only reason I can think of to having Christensen in there is Lucas wanted a connection for new viewers rather then showing multiple actors as Anakin.

When Vadar died he was Anakin again, Shaw resembled an aged Anakin and fits better then the younger Anakin played by Christensen.
