Looking for a bike that is of good quality lightweight, fast, reliable, has good suspension and comfort up to a max price of 1000. Was looking at Trek FXs 7.4 and 7.5, Giant Roam 1s and Giant Escape RX Discoveries, Kelly's Coach and Exquisite bikes, Cube CLS Ltd Bikes, KTM Lite Sprints and Ridley Tempo Xs. I was quite impressed by Merida Crossways 100-D and 300-D and their speeder bike series. I also heard good reviews about the Boardman Mx Race Bike in Halfords. Would anybody have any advice on which bike would be most suitable?

Do you really need suspension? It would be a heck of a lot lighter and faster without it. Are you planning on using it off road?

No mainly road use but sometimes on some stony paths and canal ways. But i'd probably sacrifice suspension for speed to make my journey to work shorter.

Boardman then. Cost/spec would be tough to beat. I've never regretted mine.

He's talking about the Boardman MX race, with the suspension and triple crankset, I presume you don't mean that one?

I'd get this one, compact crankset and no suspension. Lighter, faster, and gearing better suited to riding roads -http://www.halfords.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_11101_catalogId_15551_productId_777763_langId_-1_categoryId_212377

I opted for the Boardman Pro and am certainly happy with that choice. Thumbs up for Boardman from me.

The best Hybrid at (just over) 1k is the Planet X Pro Carbon!

The boardman only seem to go up to a 21inch frame which is just too small for me so perhaps its a trek for me!

Does anyone know if the disc brakes are hydraulic at some price point? They seem to be cable based on the cheaper trek 7.0 series?

what's the guideline for frame sizing with a hybrid?
herself is considering getting one, but she's 5'11" with an inside leg of about 35" or 36".

Thinly veiled 'herself has lovely long legs' post!

i can't complain; it's dead handy when i need to get something off a shelf i can't reach.
of course, it was usually her who put it there in the first place.
