Galaxy S2 wifi problem - leaking battery?

My sons' GS2 wifi has stopped working - The wifi won't switch on no matter what I try (restart, reset, wipe, flash etc etc etc). Just stays locked in the "turning on.." state. He's been on 4.1.2 for a while (stock) and I've just found out that there is a problem with this version causing the wifi to overheat and cause a leakage onto the wifi chip. see http://www.stampede-design.com/blog/2012/07/samsung-galaxy-s2-wifi-issue/#.UeZ0pY3FWSo

Anyone else come across this problem. As I've tried all the s/w tricks I can I have to assume it is a hardware issue. Anyone know what a new motherboard replacement retails at?

    thanks,
