    Hi,

Where would people suggest for a Friday - Monday city weekend in September?

Ideally flying Aer Lingus from Dublin. Not Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris or London though:)

    Any suggestions?

    Lisbon is great.

Girona is a small but nice city to visit

Nice time to go to Venice - less crowds and not too hot.

    Prague another option. Seville, Madrid.

Lisbon would be nice, hadn't considered there. Been to Madrid last year that was pretty good.

    Anybody been to VIENNA?

I was there a fortnight ago and highly recommend it.

The architecture is stunning and the people are friendly and speak fleunt English. The Hofburg Palace with its many museums is a must see although you could easily spend a whole there.

There is an excellent public transport system in place with integrated trams and metro, although the centre of town is compact enough to explore on foot.

I also found Vienna pleasantly inexpensive by European capital city standards.

Austria is in the Euro and Vienna is also a handy base for a day trip to Bratislava in Slovakia. Just over an hour away by train.

    I'm looking forward to returning.

Also, I forgot to mention above that a visit to a Viennese Coffee House is an experience not to be missed.

They all have a perplexing menu of different types of coffee and many houses have their own signiture recipes. The pastries and cakes are to die for and if you eat enough of them you probably will !

They also have a vast selection of newspapers and magazines for customers to browse over and its not unusual for some regulars to spend a couple of hours peering through the daily papers while having just the one coffee.

As I said above the people in Vienna are friendly although that may not seem to be the case with the coffee house waiters. They're not rude by any means. Just very surly and a little aloof. In a strange way they actually add to the charm of the city. A bit like the way tempermental New York taxi drivers define their city.

Prague is a great city and dirt cheap, about 230 each for flights and hotel:

Even cheaper if you go midweek.

    Second this.

Vienna is a wonderful relaxed, clean and relatively low crime city with excellent customer service and friendly residents who are willing to help you out if you get lost or to pass the time away with conversation. I have been here three times and on every visit I have encountered great people. The food is impressive and the transport links run with efficiency.

My advice would be to hang on until December and hit some of the Christmas markets around Germany, maybe koln or Munich?.But if you destined to get away in late September why not try somewhere in Italy?
