Help me build a gaming rig?

So, I have about 1000 euros to spend on a gaming rig (I can go a little more if needed but thats my aim).

Its been a long time since I built a rig but I can do it (with help) but I dont know the state of the industry atm so I need help with parts.

I've answered the questions in the stickied thread here:

If you want to ask about a new build, please include as much of the following information as possible in your thread:

1. What is your budget? 1000e

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes]

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Nope.

5. Do you need a monitor? [Yes]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. Nice and big ideally

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? Gaming laptop so, not really applicable.

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Nope.

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Nah, dont think its worth it tbh. The budget should be enough.

8. How can you pay? EH?! lol... How is this relevant? I'll pay with Wongaberries. The currency of the indigenous people of the proud land of wtfville.

9. When are you purchasing? No Rush. Any time this summer probably.

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Nah, I'm good... its more the speccing I need help with.

we just throw that in because we are nosy! Ah no, it can limit where you can order from, for instance hardwareversand which works out quite cheap for large orders doesnt take credit card, just bank transfers and paypal(+3%)

Ah well, in that case, I can do all of the above.

I'm really just looking for a reasonably kick ass rig to keep me gaming for the next 2 years or so. I reckoned 1k should do it... yeah?

So, I didnt get around to getting this at the time but now for sure I want to buy it (and Shiminay said he'd help me build it, because I'm old... and my eyes are not so good any more.

Can I beg a review of the specs above and see if anything jumps out as being upgraded now for the budget (€1000 - €1100)??

From what's in stock I'd go for this. Smaller, quieter and more powerful.

If it was me I'd drop the SSD and cooler and add at a later date and get the R9 290. Alternatively add an extra 100 to the build. I love making things awkward.

Cloning OS afterwards is a bit of a pain though.

I'd say the SSD is the best thing about my build.

I like the LG23.5" but as everyone says - the stand is rubbish.

Looks good. If you could stretch to get the r9 290 be worth it. Best price/performance card at the moment imo. But if not 280x a good card.

And maybe get monitor on amazon.

I did try squeeze a 290 in there. If he dropped the 212 evo for now and didn't mind going €50 over his max budget then yes go for the 290.

The budget is flexible enough that if there is a good "value for money" option just out of range, I can swing it! (I understand "value" is sometimes found more readily in slightly more expensive items!)

The CPU is overclockable, but the board isnt, so you could save some money and change the CPU, or spend a little more on the board to allow the option of overclocking.

Yes a few issues.

That's the overclockable i5 but the board does not support overclocking. Either change to a z87 board or a non overclockable i5.

That's a single stick of ram. You should get a 2 x 4gb kit for dual channel.

I'd go for a 212 evo for the cooler. I wouldn't bother with that more expensive single fan rad water cooler.

That monitor is a TN panel. Go for the superior IPS.

I'd get a better case as well. Preferably matx.

bad mistake on my part with the Board/overclocking. It was in a suggested build previously, and didn't look close enough.

The Evo 212 doesn't have socket 1150 on it's list, does it definitely support it? It's also not in stock.

Was going to go for a Prodigy or Silencio case, but again, not currently in stock (damnit, typically, I just looked and the prodigy now is :rolleyes:). OK, so that's that sorted

1 X 8GB vs 2 X 4GB in RAM - what's the main difference?

2 x 4GB will run faster than 1 x 8GB, it's dual channel (the sticks work in parallel)

Id argue that the difference these days is so small and irrelevant that getting a single 8gb stick opens you up 32gb in the future (for whatever reason) getting the 4gb sticks limits you to 16gb in the future unless you replace the set.

You're probably right. I haven't looked at the benchmarks in a while.

For gaming with a discrete graphics card it seems to make no difference.

Yeah, I agree that ram speed doesn't have much impact on most games or applications. Still, I wonder if dual channel 1333 MHz ram is faster than single-channel 1600 or 1866?

for the price, a single 8gb 1600 or 1866 is at the sweet spot.

DeV, Id go with Shiminay's build, but Id really try scrape another €40 for a Z87 and 4670K i5. you'd be set then for years cause you can squeeze a decent OC when it starts to get beat

I'd argue that when the time comes that 16 gigs of ram is holding someone back, it won't matter what he has, for it will be in the future and the pc will be in need of an upgrade anyway....

I am irrationally set against overclocking for reasons I dont quite understand....

Honestly, dont ask me why but I dislike the idea and never think its worth the risk for the sake of 10-15%. Yes, I *know* that that no longer applies and that they are tested and all sorts of advances etc... I guess I'm old-skool, or just stoopid.

Regardless the order went in today so here's hoping the build goes well and I'll let you all know how it runs when its up and running. Slight buyers-remorse for not going for the i7 but with that GPU it should be grand for gaming. Many thanks for all the feedback on the thread and particularly to Shims for doing a lot of the legwork while I've been sick this week .... awwww

Roll on next week... its my birthday too (coincidentally) so it'll make a hellova gift to myself
