I am looking for classes in Dublin for social dancing I mean just the basics, jiving, waltzing that kind of thing, I know theses classes go on down the country but any in Dublin? Am sick of going to events and being asked to dance and being totally crap at it!!! I need to learn!!!

I go to drop in swing dancing classes on wednesdays in the turks head, 8pm. They have it open after the class for social dancing and the first 20 mins is usually specifically for beginners, so the regulars are lovely and will ask you to dance and practice the stuff you've just learned
There's lindy hop drop in classes on mondays as well in the workmans club, think the beginner class is again at 8 and social dancing from 9
It's brilliant fun and they're all lovely

+1 to this! I haven't been in ages, but it was always good fun :) (I also remember back when it was in the palace!)

salsa dacning in dublin is a big and growing scene - something on most nights.

    You can take classes here

I tried salsa dancing before, and they forced you to partner up with strangers. There was a couple that had come together, and they were split up and not allowed dance together. It seriously put me off and I didn't go back. Is that the norm for these types of classes or, if I drag my OH along, will they allow us pair together to learn in most cases?

What do you mean they did not allow you? Did they physically force you apart, or threaten the poilce? You are paying a fee, do what you want.

I thought the whole point was to meet "strangers" anyway?

Our ones you rotate and dance with everyone, gets you used to different styles, don't see the issue

If you're female salsa, tango or any other dance classes where you need a partner can be a bit of a pain. There are usually more women than men in the class so the women end up getting short changed.

As in, if they saw the couple partnering up, they'd come up and (in a friendly manner) get them to switch partners.

Some people might want to meet new people, some people might just want to learn specific dances with their partner.

I guess Emme's point makes sense - they need the men so split couples up to benefit others.

There is dancing pretty much any night of the week:-

    Monday
Think that there is a ballroom dancing class on in town at the moment - ?letsdance
Salsa off the top of O'Connell street - salsasensation
West Coast Swing in the Outhouse on Capel Street -?try facebook?
Tango in the Pillarroom, Rotunda Hospital - tangofiesta

    Tuesday / Wed / Thurs
    Salsa/Bachata in the Arlington Hotel
Tango in the Pillarroom, Rotunda Hospital - tangofiesta
Tango in Wynns Hotel (Wed) and just opposite it (Tues) - tangoireland (facebook)

    Tues
Zouk Lombada on Harcourt street - salsasensation
If you're not based in the city then modern jive in Finnstown house hotel in Lucan - jive sensation (facebook)

    Thurs
    Salsa in the Garda Club

    - if you want to be able to dance at a wedding then best bet is the modern jive or track that ballroom dancing class down. Tango would be impressive, but not too normal at that social occasion! Salsa/Bachata/Kizomba aren't really 'wedding compatable'

..most classes (and dance sessions) will encourage you to swap partners so that you don't just get used to one persons style. It allows both people to experience different levels of dancers and makes you better dancers in the end. If you REALLY don't want to swap then I've seen people do this as well and not be forced into moving on...

I agree with Faith. I bought a few salsa classes(not sure what's it called, it was in the arlington hotel) as a present. We switched partners the first class, cause it was asked to but really only got to dance 5mins as a whole altogether the evening. It kind of defeats the purpose, if you want to get out as a couple together.

Otherwise I see the point of getting used to new styles and for singles it's great. Anyway we asked the 2nd time and were asked to keep swapping. I don't think they would've called the police if we stayed together but we respected the answer, but also discontinued the whole salsa plan.

Anyhow, I would like to continue learning, so if anyone knows of a place where it is ok to dance with a partner still :)

Usual prices are 10€a lesson. Sometimes deals of 6 classes for 50.

Don't know about the 'aunt and uncle country jive' type lessons, but there is a modern jive class in Finnstown house hotel, Lucan on Tuesday nights. It's less bobbing around, is done to normal chart music and looks great at weddings!

*bump* Just wondering if anyone knows of any jive classes in Dublin? Nothing too fancy, just a few basic moves so that I don't make a fool of myself at weddings...

Please don't bump really old threads, especially not to advertise your dance group.
