Key Fob for Mk IV Golf

So I only have a standard key for my Golf. What's the best way to obtain a fob? I saw a thread on a VAG forum which suggests that you can prgramme it yourself if you buy the fob off eBay. Has anyone tried this?

If not what's the best way about getting a new one?

You can buy a fob off ebay and transfer the transponder from one of your old keys into it - then there's no reprogramming needed. You can open up the standard key with a flathead screwdriver - you'll see the transponder glued in place. Dipping it in some boiling water frees up the glue and it pops out. Then just glue it into the new fob.

The eBay fobs are not as good quality as the OEM ones though - I got some with a central locking kit I bought and the blade constantly got stuck and wouldn't flip out again.

More on that kit is here -

Alternatively you can buy blank transponders off eBay, and use VAG Tacho to read the PIN from the standard key and help write the code to the new transponder.

There is no transponder in my current key. It's just a standard key with no buttons.

I take it you want a flip key op? Have you remote locking on your standard key?
If so you can get OEM flip key on e-bay. Just make sure it has all the electronics and a blank transponder chip inside.

    Something like this http://www.ebay.ie/itm/1J0-959-753-AG-CT-434-MHZ-NEW-VW-SEAT-TWO-2-BUTTON-FLIP-KEY-FOB-/180750139714?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a158c4142

When you get the key you will have to take it to a locksmith who can cut vw keys. They will cut the blade and program the transponder for you. Might be best to ring around and get a price first as it can be expensive.

There are two things that need to be programmed on an OEM key.
    1. The remote locking function. You can do this yourself once you have the blade cut. It tells you in the owners manual how to do it.

    2. The immobilizer function. This needs someone like a locksmith or a dealer to code.

If you don't have remote locking you can get a kit like this http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Remote-Keyless-Entry-for-car-central-lock-KE669W-ULT-/360621012598?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Safety_Security&hash=item53f6aff676

You will still need to get the blades cut and get a new chip like this http://www.ebay.ie/itm/VIRGIN-T6-ID48-TRANSPONDER-CHIP-FOR-VW-PASSAT-AUDI-A4-SKODA-OCTAVIA-CAR-KEY-FOB-/221249210000?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Safety_Security&hash=item33837b0690 and get it programmed.

There will be a transponder chip for the immobilizer in it. The remote locking and immobilizer don't work of the same transponder. They are two complete different systems but contained in the one key fob.

I've had to change the locks on the car. Would that affect anything?

Anyone on here do this job? I'd rather give it to a boardsie than a main dealer

I have fitted a few of the aftermarket kits. The wiring is pretty easy it's just the hassle of getting keys cut and chips coded is the costly bit. I couldn't see a main dealer fitting the aftermarket kit tbh. If you wanted remote locking a cheaper option is just get a kit with a 2 button fob and continue to use your existing key?

When the locks were changed dose the same key open the door and start the car or have you 2 keys now?

Anyone know how costly this is?

I paid 80 euro to get a key cut and chip programed/coded. I supplied the chip and key.

You can remove the transponder from one of the spare keys easily enough - which would make it free.

You can code the chip yourself easily enough too - you'll need a cable to connect to the car which can be gotten off eBay cheap, the transponder chips are about 40c each.
