Pedal Position Sensor

Quick one - any ballparks how much I should be looking at to replace these in a 04 Vectra? Accelerator pedal.

First stop told me main dealer only, and said it could take 10 minutes or 4 hours for labour depending on how well the mechanic knew the car. Sounded a bit mad.

That's mad, they want to charge you 4 hours so their mechanic can learn how to replace a part, that should take 10 minutes.

Shocked that he admitted to it :) Well not really.

That is pretty much what he said, to be honest. Charged me €20 for three minutes plugged into the laptop too, but I was happy to pay that as my usual mechanic was closed and I was desperate to confirm it wasn't a more serious problem like a clutch or gearbox issue - the car is lacking power something terrible, intermittently.

Any idea of cost of part+labour all told? Main dealer or otherwise?

Get your car checked out by a trusted mechanic before going any further. The diagnosis may not be correct lots of things can cause power loss.

Happy enough that this is the stated problem, I was shown the laptop and the only errors mentioned were

    Pedal Position Sensor A
    Pedal Position Sensor B
Something about pedal emergency mode (I was told this was a limp-home mode deisgned to get you by until the problem can be fixed)
Remote key error (key's long been broken and only works in the door, not by remote).

If there were other isues, surely the diag would be kicking up more of a fuss?

Not savvy enough to attempt repairs myself. A wiper blade or a bulb yeah, but not this :P

1/2 hour would be to much.

That main dealer is a rip off.

Yeah, looks like a piss easy job alright. Not a clue on price but I put a load of sensors on a car in college, which ranged in price from a fiver for a standard part, while €250 would buy you what is used on F1 cars, so if they quote anything like this tell them where to go.

I'm guessing that anything over €50 for the part and an hours labour and you're getting absolutely screwed.

I wouldn't buy a pedal sensor for it. I work on these every day and I can tell you that the pedal sensor won't fix your problem.

The problem with a lot of mechanics is they just plug in and replace whatever comes up on the computer and then scratch their head when it doesn't fix it.

It is not always the part that shows on the computer that is the fault, for example a faulty airflow meter can give an o2 sensor code, as that is the sensor that will have a high/low reading, a new sensor will still have the same reading as the problem lies elsewhere.

You need the problem properly diagnosed before you buy any parts. If you want some more information on the problem send me a pm.

Rang Opel there and they gave me the usual guff about it being very expensive. However he seemed genuine in saying that it wasn't a job they like to get because it's hard to diagnose which matches up with what Lucifer has just said.

Was meant to drop it into my local indy mech this morning and slept it out, looks like she's staying on emergency mode till Monday now. Oh well.
