Is it just me, or do release aids make it harder?

I have a 55lb compund and a wriste release aid thing, now the release aid never came with instructions, but i can assume that im using it right, however I cant physically pull back my bow when i try to use it. Id like to use it but i cant, so i always go with my fingers instead, and sometimes the string hits my fingers and that causes problems with the arrows flight :(

So my question is, is this a universal problem with release aids, or am i a special case?

Maybe go for a release which you hold in your hand rather than a wrist one.

For the love of God, please pay a visit to your local club and seek some proper instruction and advice.

I would agree with this completely.

It sounds like you are not getting your release right as the string should not be hitting off your fingers. It's not something you can learn on the internet, you need to be shown.

Some release aids are pulled by the elbow, these require the correct back muscles to be built up...55# is 'heavy'....when you are using your fingers you are probably using arm muscles to draw the bow as the finger draw makes it possible. The back muscles are the correct muscles to be using in either case.

A 55# compound is a serious machine, more than capable of being used for hunting (where it's legal ......and it's not here) where it more than likely will cause arrow 'pass-throughs' in the prey. Prey of similar construction and size to humans. I mention this purely to emphasise the importance of getting knowledgeable help. Compounds are a very 'techy' item and need to be set up by someone with some experience and knowledge.

Another thing is that there are different types of release aid and you have to find a type that suits you.

I should probally address this point i guess.

As far as im aware the nuig club doesnt operate over summer
secondly a friend went in with this bow and was told he was not allowed to shoot it there. So thats a pretty big turn off going in aswell.
Otherwise, i pretty much ask questions as and when they come up, Theyre generally not in my head when i meet archery people, also, they tend to involve links, so this is a useful medium.
Thirdly, im just shooting for fun with relatively cheap equipment, im not serious enough for a club yet.

Fair enough regarding the NUIG club but I think there's likely to be other clubs around. There's no need to be serious to join a club........... a sense of humour is always appreciated. ;)

The main reason we're suggesting a club is safety and knowledge.

    In the Galway area are:

    Ard Ri Athenry
    Athenry
    Galway Archers
    GMIT

These are IAAA clubs, in the north of Mayo there are IFAF clubs.

Call down to the field at GMIT on Wednesday evening or Sunday morning for a chat.
