iMessage Issue

I was under the impression iMessage would send if your connected to a wifi network?

My monthly data and text subscription were up. But the person I was going to text has an iPhone as well and I assumed that seeing as I was on wifi the iMessage would send.

So I sent the message and it sent in the blue iMessage bubble, but then got a notification from my network saying my monthly data limit was reached and the message wouldn't send. I thought it would send via the wifi and not my phone data?

It should. Have you turned 3G off?

I tried turning that off last night and it still wouldn't send. Tried it again just now and it worked, odd.

Btw is it necessary to have to turn off 3G for this? I thought it would send over wifi as default once your on a network?

It's possible that it initially tried and failed to send over wifi but your friend's phone was offline. Then by the time it sent successfully your phone's wifi connection was sleeping so it sent using 3G.

Turning 3G off shouldn't make a difference to it being sent over mobile or wifi

Yeah I think he has to be on wifi the instant you are. It isn't sent later.

It seems your phone was sending via 3G but you had used up your data bundle. Just have wifi on and it will run fine. The receiver must have 3G or wifi to receive.

Not if your data bundle/credit is used up.

Yeah obviously buy it seemed like you were suggesting above that you couldn't receive an iMessage without 3G
