    Hi All,

I am looking to book travel insurance for my holiday in Lanzarote and have come up with an interesting one.

For the purposes of travel insurance , is Lanzarote in Europe ? Obviously I know that its part of Spain and they use the Euro and all that but I went to book insurance with the AA and they define Europe as the following :

    Europe
The Republic of Ireland, and the continent of Europe west of the Ural Mountains including all countries with a Mediterranean coastline.

So Lanzarote is not on the continent of Europe and does not have a Mediterranean coastline.

The difference in price is quite high. 2 weeks insurance for a party of 4 is €50 for Europe whereas its €110 for Worldwide.

I have emailed the AA for clarification but am curious if anybody has any thoughts.

Lanzarote would normally be classed as Europe but can't comment on the specifics of the Policy AA are offering you. If their Underwriter doesn't class it as Europe it's time to shop around.

So i actually found it out, deep within the terms and conditions on the website.

What area do Egypt, the Canary Islands, Morocco and Tunisia come under on your policies?

Egypt is considered Europe, Tunisia, Morocco and the Canary Islands are considered Area 5, Worldwide excluding The USA, Canada and the Caribbean.

How can they say that Egypt, which is physically in Africa is part of Europe, whereas Lanzarote is not ?? Madness.

Strange stuff from the AA. I guess I will have to look elsewhere.

Well at least your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid for the Canary Islands. And if you don't have one, it's available completely free of charge. Of course, it's not an exact substitute for travel insurance and the majority of people take travel insurance too.

make sure you read and re-read their "terms" before you book with anyone. i had travel insurance going there last year and my iphone, wallet and camera were robbed. made official report, got copies from the police, etc. and sent them all to insurance company only to be told the phone/camera werent considered personal possessions (??!!) and the money stolen was €95 but i wouldnt get anything since it had to be over €100 :/

The AA have now emailed me back to say that they do consider Lanzarote as part of Europe so happy days.

(I am an AA member so I get an extra little discount)

Make sure you keep a printout of that email just in case in the event of a claim anyone tries to make out you should have taken Worldwide cover. Shouldn't happen but best to make sure. Hope you have a great holiday, am very jealous!
