Already posted this under carlow it catogory and got nothing...

I am wondering if there is anyone who has done, is doing or has heard anything about the pilot studies course.

On paper it seems like a perfect choice for aspiring pilots but I would greatly appriciate some insiders knowledge on the course to see if its actually worth it.

    Thanks in advance

    From their website;

"Please Note: Due to a low number of eligible applicants for the above course it has become necessary to withdraw this first year course for September 2013. The Institute of Technology Carlow regrets any inconvenience caused. We would encourage you to consider applying for the following alternative courses at the Institute"

If it's like their aircraft engineers degree I'd steer clear.

I saw that but I wouldn'tbe doing it for a few years anyway.

The problem with it is that it costs almost 90 grand to do.. I bet thats why there is such a low take up on it

From what I read on the prospectus it's in Portugal I think.

youd get the theory, then left to get your practical off your own bat if its like the engineering degree.

I'd avoid these university pilot scheme things. It's universities trying to muscle in to the pilot training industry with little or no knowledge of the mechanics and dynamics of it.

I know a lad who was doing a university pilot studies course in a Dublin University and left after 8 months as he thought it was a crock and the people running it had no idea about the airline industry.

Is there any courses in the area of aviation that ye could recommend doing before applying for the air corps?

I'm not sure which bit you mean so I'll do both.

Engineering and courses like it would teach you an awful lot about the type of things you could utilise as a pilot and the types of concepts involved in the theory parts. The workings of complex machines and the likes.

As far as not hanging your hat on the Air Corps goes, they take 3 a year and have a lot of applicants. They have been accused of hiring along family lines and will usually always take at least one enlisted defense forces member per year. So you now have 2 places open to the wider public. In the time you spend trying to get in you could be chipping away at learning to fly privately

You've to pay 85000 over three years to do this course also.

Those 3rd level registration fee's are getting worse every budget!

    Hi there,
If you want to become a commercial pilot, avoid the college-based courses. They originated in the US and they suit the hiring system there but they are not really relevant here as the candidate does not get real-world experience of the airline industry and is in effect, neither fish nor fowl. Getting into the Air Corps as a pilot is very very hard, purely because of the limited number of places and if you really want to get to fly soon, then just get started with a PPL, which you can do at your leisure here.

    regards
