Audi Driveshaft problem?

My 2000 Audi A4 Quattro has started making a grinding/rubbing noise which appears to be coming from the driveshaft.
It doesn't make the noise under acceleration. It does it when decelerating or coasting and is a rotational noise which slows as the car comes to a stop.
    Any ideas? Thanks

Why do you assume driveshaft over wheel bearing, which would be more common? Have you checked to ensure nothing is hitting the driveshaft (like a heatshield from the exhaust)?

I had a tear in a CV boot on my Quattro S8 driveshaft, the sound was not like you describe though, it was a loud "bird chirping" noise. Putting in more CV grease solved it (though changing the boot would have been required longer term).

It appears to be coming from the centre of the car. I won't be able to get it up on a lift next week at the earliest.
If you push the car along it makes the noise. Doesn't do it when you push it backwards though.
