TOM126 is showing on flight radar holding off the north Wales coast after returning from the Atlantic en-route to Sanford Florida SFB. I would assume burning fuel before landing back at MAN, I hope nothing worse. The Dreamliner does not need this attention right now!

Looks like it's ready to land. Has this plane been in Shannon recently?

Pictures on Sky News of an Ethiopian Airlines 787 at Heathrow surrounded by fire engines and foam on the ground, plane at the terminal.

Hmm....Etiopian Airlines fly B787's now. This aircraft was probably parked up. Usually sits at LHR for up to a week before returning to Addis AB. Usually towed to prevent flat spots on the tyres.

Runways on London Heathrow Airport closed due to a fire on board Ethiopian Airlines B787 Dreamliner aircraft at gate

Strange goings on, the fire in LHR happened at 1630 and the Thompson turned back a good bit before that.

Just as I thought. The 590 stands. As usual any excitment on my days off. Right beside the fire station lucky enough.

Seriously that is the last thing we need. I'm sure there is no need to tell you where the finger is pointing all ready.

Sky are already saying 'as per emergency services at LHR' fire at the rear of the plane

Sky News did mention that TOM126 returned due to Mechanical issue but no further info. Surprisingly enough they resisted speculation. Either way the Dreamliner has got a bad rep, its a pity as its a beautiful bird.

I don't think Shannon has any facility to repair or carry out maintenance on the B787. It is always the best option to return to base unless their is an immediate threat to the safety of the aircraft. It may have been an ETOP's verification flight that failed its test. It may have been ok to get to it's destination but may have ended being stuck there awaiting a part to be transported to it.

The flight crew will have discussed their problem with Thompson engineering and decided returning to Manchester the best option.

Plus they had a 767 available to transfer the passengers to.

Shannon is used for emergency diversion or for rectification of minor technical issues that can be fixed quickly be a local qualified engineer.

Engineering/operations departments will carefully balance the issues and decide what the best option is in each scenario.
