Hi there. My Dad is a big fan of war movies/series and so I thought I'd look into getting him a box set for his birthday. Could anyone recommend any good series?

He loved Band of Brothers and the Pacific. Are there any other good ones worth watching? I know I'm going to end up watching them myself too! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You looking for fiction ones or historic ones?

There is a fictional series about the US invasion of Iraq called Generation Kill, which is brilliant. There's not much action in it and its quite comedic at times but it does a superb job at showing one unit's time in Iraq.

The Unit is somewhat war based and is excellent. Then there was also a shortlived TV show called Over There, which was based around the war in Iraq.

    Based on a non-fiction book

Well by fictional I meant non documentary.

Yea, non documentary for sure. Those are some great suggestions. I'll definitely check those out if not just for me.

    Thanks!

Awesome, gritty and a true story. Finally get the German side.

Will definitely check out Our Mothers, Our Fathers. Although the choice of music is pretty odd in that YouTube clip. Definitely doesn't suit. Will give The Days Of Honours a look too, Our Mothers, Our Fathers was supposed to have aired already on BBC2 under the name Generation War, I don't know how I missed it as it would have definitely stood out. Unless they have yet to show it.

Not exactly true. Lets say it is German version of the truth.

I'd suggest The World at War

It's probably the most comprehensive, haunting and excellent documentary series ever made. I bought a boxset of it a few years ago, and it was expensive, 90quid - worth every penny.

All the characters are real and its basically what they went through.

Please explain 'German version of the truth'

Have you seen the series? Its not exactly flattering to Germany.

The video was fan made and it appears the music was added by the uploader.

I mean the way the Polish resistance movement is shown.

Its showed them to be effective, brutal, divided and a bit anti semitic.

Not something I know much about but I did not get the sense that it was unrealistic.

I assume from your username that you would be a lot more familiar with the reality!

    thats true
    and a bit anti semitic.
"a bit". My opinion is that there is much more than a bit.

Watched the first hour of it last night (then my copy of it stopped working). Was pretty impressed by it, visually its very impressive and some decent performances. They do show a lot of the horrors carried out by the germans in the west but nowhere to the extent that actually happened. The plot with the jewish guy is a bit odd, they seem to be potraying it in a way that jews had a much easier time in Berlin in 1941 than seemed to be the case but I'll have to see how it plays out.
