I was thinking of planting comfrey in our orchard between the apple trees. There's good grass between the trees but sheep or cattle can't eat it as they'll destroy the trees.

    Any other suggestions?

Shropshire sheep are use a lot in orchards and in Christmas tree plantations.
If its big enough they will only eat the grass.
They are used a lot in France for this purpose and there is a demand for them also in Germany.
They are in Ireland and have being advertised on donedeal.
