Apologies if I'm in the wrong place.

I have about 250 to spend on a new or second hand bike. I know little or nothing about them other than wheels and brakes are rather important. I'm not looking for a racing bike, just a general purpose one with decent wheels that won't struggle on anything rougher than sandpaper. So I guess a mountain bike of some sort is what I'm after?

Any recommendations ? Maybe something on Adverts that's worth looking at ? Had a look myself but not really sure what's good and what's some kids unwanted Tesco Christmas special for 99.99.

I'm 5' 9" tall, 83Kg with a 32" inside leg so even a frame size would be a good start ?
