    Hi There,

Im hoping someone can help me with this.

Im a 42 year old woman who is having increasing problems with facial hair.

I have been plucking this for 4 years now and the problem is getting worse.

I’ve considered laser to remove facial hair but I HAVE to be able to pluck inbetween sessions . . . . What other options are out there??I’d appreciate any advice . . . . I’m at the end of my tether . . . .

Go to a good salon and get professional advice on hair removal. They might recommend waxing or laser treatment depending on the colour and consistency of the hair.

Facial hair can be an indication of hormonal problems like PCOS so go to your doctor to get that checked out.

Hi there, firstly don't worry too much, this is such a common problem. I wouldn't jump the gun and say its PCOS unless you are having other symptoms too. Unfortunately hair growth can just get worse on our faces as we age, especially in perimenopausal stage of life.

If your hair is dark and coarse, laser should work for you. You will need to shave before every session and use a high sunblock in between. For fine hair it won't work and can stimulate dormant follicles as can waxing. Electrolysis is the only proven permanent method of hair reduction but it takes time and you need someone skilled doing it.

Just to add don't pluck if you can at all it will only make it worse in the long run. If you are embarking on laser or electrolysis this is especially important.

Have you tried waxing? I only started about a year ago, and havent looked back. its sore, very sore but its worth it. My hair is think and coarse (PCOS!) and I will really only get a good week or two before I start to pluck the strays, but I also use immac (Spelt Wrong I think!) for coarse hair inbetween and it helps.
I looked into laser but couldnt cope with the in betweens as would have a mustache (honestly!)

Sorry but this isn't good advice. You get a week out of waxing then pluck the hairs which increases blood flow to the hair follicles, and then adding a chemical hair remover, really not good. At this rate you will have a never ending cycle of hair removal.

Laser should work very well if you have dark coarse hair and pale skin. The darker the hair and paler the skin the better.

Unfortunately you won't be able to pluck in between because this will just decrease the effectiveness of the laser. The laser won't be reaching the hair at the correct time in the hair's growth cycle.

You can however use a hair removal cream or shave. It's important not to use anything that removes the hair at the root. Doing this for a short time will mean you'll have a life time hair free.

In my experience, once you start laser treatment the amount of hair drastically reduces. Take a few sessions close together (every 6 weeks or less) then you can leave more time in between sessions as there will be a lot less hair.

Also, look into PCOS with your GP. The contrpceptive pill Dianette can drastically reduce hair growth in this case also.

Creams in my opinion just lead to heavier regrowth. I also have a problem with putting such chemicals in my skin.

    I use waxing.

I'd definitely recommend laser. I'd have a full beard otherwise. Now I just sport a fashionable goatee.

Seriously though, waxing is messier and more time consuming. Felt like I was losing an uphill, foresty battle with it. The laser gave me results I was pleased with, with much less hassle.

I have had electrolysis done. It takes time but it works. If you are going to get it done ensure the person who is doing it has plenty of experience.

Spent fortune on laser and didnt work for me.

I stick to threading these days. Definitely recommend this.

First of all, you should not be plucking, in any circumstance.

    No no no no.

This will make the hair even coarser/thicker. Maybe this is why you are thinking it is getting worse.

If you go do laser, you should never pluck in between (just shave). You will only be stimulating the hair follicle to regrow. And youll be wasting your money.

Laser works on dark hairs only (absorbs the light more). It may make it lighter and indeed work to a certain degree, but there is no way of knowing until you try it.

It's important to note that laser also depends on how coarse the hair is, not just how dark. I have black hair and was turned down for laser on my face as they said the hair was too fine - I think some less reputable salons probably would have gone ahead with it.

I currently use an epilady with the facial attachment - saves a lot of time and means I don't have to wait for it to grow back inbetween anything. However as a result of this thread I'll be looking into electrolysis too. Best of luck OP.

Personally I found threading agony! But goes to show you we're all different and it's a matter of what works for one will not work for all!

Breadcrusts, this Forum is for people seeking advice or help with Personal Issues. You are probably better off asking in the Beauty Forum where you might get better answers to your question.
