Advice on road bikes

Sorry if I'm putting this in the wrong place or there's an open thread somewhere else for it.

My old mountain bike (which lasted nearly 18 years, though only consistently used over the past 2-3 years) finally kicked it there last week and was looking into getting a cheap road bike as a replacement, mainly because they're lighter and if I had a decent one I'd use it far more often. I'd use it for the roughly 7-8k round trip to work Monday to Friday as well as the roughly 4-5k round trip to the park for training and matches (thank you googlemaps for the distances, haha)

Found this one online (http://www.donedeal.ie/bicycles-for-sale/castello-potenza-road-racing-2013/4484008), and seeing as if I used my parents bike to work scheme the cheapest bike would be about 300+ (have to use one particular dealer, and only available in Jan which is no use to me) thought I'd go for the cheapest option (seeing as I'm paying myself sadly). Only thing is, I have no idea about bikes so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't be expected it to be a great deal, obviously there are better bikes with better parts n what not out there but for the price and the distances I'd be doing would it be worth it? Cheers

    Edit:

Actually just found it for 30 199e, sound. (http://store.jhmcloughlin.com/product_p/bike_castello-potenza-road-rac.htm)

You can't legally use a parent's bike to work scheme. That would be tax fraud.

That bike would commonly be considered below entry-level for a road bike because it doesn't have integrated shifters.

At 300 quid you're better off going second hand. You can pick up a lovely bike for 250 quid if you look hard enough and are a bit lucky.

You are very right my apologies.

Would just be to get from A to B, and wouldn't be looking to hit any large distances or anything. Cheers for the reply, I'll have a look around at second hands ones too.

Sorry but I think you should avoid all these 'new' bikes for €250 etc. They are rubbish. None of these 'Vikings', 'Giro's' anything that is new and just calling themselves 'road bike'.

Something like this would be better http://www.adverts.ie/bikes/giant-scr-4-0-road-bike/3229011

Like above I'd stay away from the Vikings, castellos, bentinis etc on donedeal for less than €3-400. They're very poor spec and heavy bikes. I had a look at a bentini in my LBS (was in buying assembly paste and checked it out) and while it actually looks really nice in the flesh, the equipment spec is piss-poor on it. Thumb shifters on the bars and flimsy brakes, very cheap tyres and wheels and an extremely noisy free hub. Donedeal and adverts.ie is full of second hand quality bikes for €300 and less.
