Blasts to scare birds?

I live in a semi-rural area (Lusk to be exact) where there is a high density of housing right next to agricultural land. One of the landowners has a one of those blast machines (unsure of exact terminology!) to (presumably) scare away birds.

No problem at all with this, he needs to protect his livelihood.

However, the blasts continue until 11pm each night which seems excessive. Has been going on a few weeks, and is getting really annoying as we tend to head to bed at 10ish and can't sleep until it has stopped. (It's probably only a few hundred metres from my house).

Does he need to run it this late? Are there any birds around that late at night?! Are there any rules associated with using these machines.

I don't know who owns the field, so can't approach the farmer directly.

flying vermin are most active in the dawn and dusk hours.

there are no rules but common sense... it is not being allowed to run all night so count yourself lucky. other than that you get into noise pollution legislation which is aimed at other problems like music on late at night next door.

if you did know the farmer you could ask him is it possible to reposition the 'banger' and he could oblige you.

price of living near/in the countryside i'am afraid

Interesting, especially seeing as the banging doesn't start until about 8am!

It's probably best to try and locate the farmer and talk to him first, shouldn't be that hard to find out who he is.

If you have no joy then there is legislation to help you, just contact your local council and they will tell you the best way forward.

I think you should approach him and offer to disconnect banger in the evenings at a time everyone could live with. It's only a connection similar to the gas connection on your super-ser or similar gas powered domestic appliance. He might be getting a bit less cover on his corn but he won't have to make the journey to turn it off every night and you get a bit of peace and a walk in the evenings.

    the crow banger,

very common around this time of the year, they'll do sertious damge unless you stop them. saw over 2 ac of a field of corn destroyed one year and they do digg out a huge amount of suds too. your lucky he turns it off at night. my dad had one years ago and it was our job to turn it off every night usually about 10 or 11 this time of the year.

again one of the drawbacks of living by farmland, farmers have to look after their farms. with the hot weather you proably have to leave the window open at night but it could be worse you could have the crows sitting on your roof.

Its probably on a timer so offering to disconnect wont do much good. I'm sure if you ask him to change it to finish at 10 or 10:30 he would oblige.
The fact it doesn't start till 8 means he is considerate enough of neighbors

theres a chance he may be trying to be fair by waiting till 8 even though crows start at dawn.

    Mod Warning
Lads, relax, the op started a thread about a topic that he is not familiar with. Please do not post comments that might inflame other posters, be stupid or threatening. We just don't need it here.

OP I think the consensus here is that you need to make a better effort to find the field owner and speak to him/her in order to resolve this situation!

Show's how long it's been since I had anything to do with one.

Yep. There set a timer. The banger in the place I work is set to twelve minutes.
On most of them there's a wee switch where the banger is connected to the tank. Like ye'd ha e for flow on yer bbq!

They are not on a timer. I have one and it has a light sensor on it. You can delay the start in the morning but unless you disconnect the battery in the evening you cannot stop at night. The dawn delay can be set from 45 minutes to a few hours however you cannot stop at night as it is the light sensor that switches it off.

To be fair to the farmers he/she has the dawn delay set to the maximum but cannot do anything about the night time. OP I would say he/she is a reasonable person like you seem to be and if you talked to him he might reposition the banger so that it will be further away from your house or he may allow you to disconnect the battery at 9-10pm if you are willing to reconnect in the morning however he will have to reset the Dawn delay to allow for this as if it is disconnected I think it consideres the turn on as as morning.

Ours are on timers. Can schedule different start and finish times for different days. Also can change the number of bangs and interval between bangs. Works off battery

I can set diffferent intervals, not of bangs etc or set it to random however the photo electrical cell is what starts it in the morning and you set the dawn delay off that max is about 3 or 4 hours
