Check out El Medano. not far away from p d l a but infinitely nicer. that place is a hellhole of hecklers trying to get you into crap bars and restaurants. you can rent apartments in El medano. there are some hotels too.

Hi, I'm a similar age to you and have been to playa de las Americas 5/6 times and absolutely love it. I normally stay in an area nicknamed the golden corner. It's a beautiful area with the best shops and restaurants on the island. The safari centre is there and the restaurants on the roof are second to none. Anyway my favorite apartments are parque Santiago III & IV. They are a little dated but price, location and MASSIVE saltwater pool keeps bringing me back. Its right on the beach too. I also loved the sunprime coral suites. It's adult only so its very laid back around the pool. The place is spotless and I love the decor. It's about a 3/4 minute walk to the safari centre and beach. I can assure you that this area is far from a "hell hole" and you'll get no one annoying you on the street. (Its about a 10 minute walk to Veronica's strip/starco centre where all the cheap vodkas and go go dancers hang out)

Place called Chayofa Country Club - it's a few km out of Las Americas up the hill, about €8 in a taxi. Plcae has everything you need, 3 star I'd say. We're early 20's and went as a group of 5 in a villa with a pool to itself, but there's apartments etc too if there's just the two of you. Bit quainter than the mad busy hotels and cheaper too.

You'll get another vote for parque Santiago from me. We stayed in 3 several years ago and were very close to bookjng a self catering apt in 4 this year. It the quiet corner of las Americas. The nice restaurants and shops are close by. If you want nightlife it's just a 10-15 minute stroll up the road.

Won't go wrong with bitacora food is very good
Parque Santiago 3 is good too but no air conditioning puts me off going in summer have stayed agree times in winter and its grand
Cleopatra is also nice pool area can be very quiet but you can use med/ palace pool.
Most hotels in the vicinity of the safari centre are grand
