went to buy a car & rang my insurance, they said the car has come back as a cat A write off, so I checked the various sites like mywheels.ie & Motorcheck & the car came back as good no problems what so ever & has flew through the nct recently.
I checked the car from top to bottom & there is no sign of any damage!! so where are the insures getting there facts from? I know the owner of the car & he had insured up till last week!?!

    Cheers Brian

Might there be a mix up with the reg.

    Ask them for the VIN.

    Whats a Cat 1? Thought it was A B C D?

Some cars dont show up under anything only the company it was wrote off with.

Edit Cat A write off. The last Insurer said the car was 100%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

If the reg is showing up as a Cat A and the reg is actually linked to a Cat A then there car must be cloned.

Cat A isnt even parts worthy.

That's what my insurer said, so how do I go about trying to sort this out as I want the car.

Well ring the insurer and ask them did they write it off, if they didnt then it could be a clerical error.

Check the chassis numbers everywhere on the car make sure they match the plate.

I wouldnt touch it until it was confirmed a clerical error and I most certainly wouldnt touchi it if it was a Cat A as it shouldnt be on the road.

If the car's a clone then you can't. Does the VIN # on the cert match the numbers on the car?

I'm sure the manufacturer made more than one of them. Why do you want this particular headache. Leave it for the dealer to sort out. Buy a different example of the same car.

Got a quote with different Insurance company & they said the car was fine!

Forget about getting quotes; you need to sort out if the car is up to scratch first. A Cat A write off is supposed to be destroyed; it is not safe to be put back on the road in any capacity.

Have you confirmed the car is fine, or have you just found an insurance company who is unaware of the car's history?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭Brian.D

I have had the car checked & have ran it through all the vehicle history check websites & it comes back fine every time, obviously I don't want a pile of sh1t & death trap on the road!!?! I'm just curious as to why the sites are saying its fine & has passed the nct!! so are these sites just a waste of money!?

Id ring the insurance company back that said it was a write off and get the full details of it and confirm the car, chassis and vrc with them or if it was written off then where should it be if it was I.e scrap yard or axa yard etc.

I thonk youre missing the point.

If the car is cloned it could be another perfect car (stolen maybe) with those plates stuck on.

You need to ring the insurance company and ask them did they write it off or where they got the information from.

You seem to be ignoring any advice given to you.

Plus, if the car is stolen and cloned, it still belongs to the original owner or their insurance company, who would be entitled to recover it from you.

Seriously, if its a particular make/model/year/spec you want, there is another one for sale somewhere. What's so special about this one?

They are not a waste of money, but they dont always have all the information. Its worth the money to see what comes up on them, but just because nothing comes up doesnt mean that there is nothing wrong.

You have been told by an insurance company that this car is a Cat A write off. The first thing you need to do is verify with the insurance company that their details are actually correct; check the reg number and the VIN number. If both match and their details are correct then you need to find out where they are getting their information from. It might be that they are the company that wrote the car off, and that nobody else has been given that information.

Until you have fully verified all of this information, do not even consider parting with money for this car.

given the nature of the responses in this thread I'm guessing its special because of the price!!!

Was thinking that. Could there be a correlation between price and dodginess?

    ;)

Nothing special about it now, its just curiosity at this stage. With all the cars Ive bought, I never came across this problem before so just want to see how it pans out.

If you'd like us to verify the VIN and Logbook number just PM the details.

Well after a lot of phone calls & emails it turns out it was a clerical error by the insurance company!!! but instead of double checking there records which they told me they had done twice!! they just fobbed me off so I got in touch with the department of transport & all was fine & then strangely enough the insurance company admitted it was there mistake.
