Was in UL doing a level 6, got the full grant. Only completed first year. Didn't return to second year. Just been informed by a dear friend that I may have to pay for tuition fees, which is like 4k? I'll be heading into a level 7 or 8, depending on where I get, but will I have to pay my tuition fees? EEP! I wasnt expecting to be saving so much... :(

If someone could get back to me asap that'd be brilliant :D x

Since you've already completed a year you won't be eligible for free fees or a third level grant for the equivalent time in your new course. Unfortunately that means you'll have to pay tuition fees, student contribution, and student levy for your first year there.

For a level 7 or 8 that's likely to be well over €4,000 per year. See the fee schedule here:

    http://www.studentfinance.ie/mp9377/course-fees/index.html

From this link from student finance website it says

    '
Tuition fees will be paid in respect only of students attending full-time undergraduate courses. The courses must, other than exceptionally, be of a minimum of two years duration. The courses must be followed in one of the institutions listed in Appendix 2.Tuition fees will not be paid in respect of:students pursuing a second undergraduate course.students who already hold a postgraduate qualification

Notwithstanding this condition and subject to compliance with the other conditions of the,Free Fees initiative, students who already hold a Level 6 qualification (Higher Certificate or National Certificate) or a Level 7 qualification (Ordinary Bachelor Degree or National Diploma) and are progressing to a Level 8 (Honours Bachelor Degree) course without necessarily having received an exemption from the normal duration of the course may be deemed eligible for free fees

From what it says above you should, technically, be eligible for free fees

Oh sorry by your post I had thought you were going up a level to 7 or 8 maybe worth a shot applying to these and keeping away from the level 6 if you can't afford the fees :)

I dropped out halfway into second year my first go-round. When I went back a couple of years later, I had to pay full fees for the first year and for the first semester of my second year. Pain in the arse but it meant there was no way I'd be dropping out again.
