Need a bit of advice

Hi there, just wondering could anyone give me a bit of advice. From last October to now I have been working part time in a retail shop. The contract was a minimum of 20hours a week but I would do 20-26 hours depending on the week. The shop was just under an hour away from me so was a costing a third of my monthly pay to just get to work.
I have a child that is 6 months old. Unfortunately myself and herself split up so now I am a single father.
Since last week I took a job in another retail shop that was located 5 minutes away from me. The only problem is that the contract is a minimum of 8 hours a week. The roster for the next month has been done and every week I am working 3 days and for a total of 16-18 paid hours.

Am I entitled to claim anything for the days I am not working? I have never claimed social welfare before. I would have no problem living off that money but as I have to pay for a child aswell its going to be tough.

Before anyone says, Im basically coming out with the same money in the new job as I did in the previous job after I took away my petrol costs.

To get jobseekers for the days your not working you would have to been unemployed and taken up employment of 3 days or less a week, or been employed and suffered a substantial loss in employment eg. being cut back to a 3 day week or less a week.

You would also have to be genuinely looking for and seeking FULL time employment.

Family income supplement might be your best bet.
