BBB and Shimano front ring compatibility?

I have an Ultegra compact chain-set with a 38T BBB on it. When I am changing rings with little pressure the chain often falls between the rings and won't engage, shifting either up or down. It's not a derailleur adjustment problem.
Anyone know a solution before I go to expense of getting a Shimano ring in the hope that it will work better?
