Questions to ask the breeder

    Hello all!
As some of you may know my dog recently passed away. I need to get a new dog over the summer period so it can be trained a bit before college comes around.

It has been a long time since I've needed to go through the buying process so I'm a bit rusty! The breeder in mind is a IKC approved. Can anyone recommend some good questions to ask the breeder? Anything I should look out for/ be aware of while visiting the breeder?

    Some ideas for you

Ask to see breed relevant health certs e.g hips, elbows, clear eye certs,

Ask to see dam & puppies, photo of sire as many don't own the father. Are they reared indoors, socialised with other dogs, children etc.

Ask are parents excellent breed examples or proven working dogs? Why are they breeding?

Are both parents IKC reg? ask about previous litters and any photos of these.

    Worming, vaccination record,

It is very important they provide after sales advice and that you have comeback should a puppy end up having an inherited disorder

To be honest they should be asking you lots of questions to see if you are a suitable owner for one of their puppies

Take a look at the puppy farm awareness sticky, there's a list of questions to ask a breeder.

Personally, the breeder I got my first dog from wouldn't even discuss her pups until she'd quizzed me on what I knew about the breed, time I had for dog, garden size, how much I would exercise the dog, training methods, etc.

Felt a bit odd but then she wanted to be sure her pups were going to a good home, and would be loved. I still email her at Christmas with photos, also she always says any problems call her, and I have, she was great.

Do your research on the breed, know the health issues, ask the questions, and if it ever feels even slightly wrong walk away. I waited 15months for a pup, it was worth it.
