Xtravision Summer Pass: €20/month for unlimited rentals

Its advertised as a summer deal but my guess is that they are testing the waters for an all new rental model. You can take out up to 2 rentals per transaction and all rentals are one night only i.e. conceivably up to 60 DVD's for the month.

Interesting, could be a much more convenient version of screenclick if you have a local store. The problem with screenclick was that the postal system was too slow to keep up with your list. The "one night only" thing is pretty limiting, mostly for games as you might want to play for a week, finish it and return it but it's not so bad for movies if you just pick it up when you want to watch it. I can understand why its in place, so they've always got stock of particular titles I guess

Plus you get to watch what you want when you want, which gives the edge over Screenclick etc, and it applies to new releases giving it an edge over Netflix, and a price advantage over iTunes which are €4 for new releases. Kind of covers all the competitive advantage angles. Ultimately I think we will see the Xtravision rental space shrink even further than already as it goes for a hybrid HMV/Xtravision model. Its no accident that they have been brought under the same ownership.

True, would be nice to get new release blurays at a flat monthly rate although I don't think I can warrant signing up atm tbh. I have both a cineworld monthly pass for the same price as well as a netflix sub with all region access which serves most of my needs. It would be nice from time to time to pop into xtravision and pick up a new release I missed a few months previously at the cinema as sometimes I just can't be arsed with the trip to the cinema (as much as I love it) but with all my movie subs atm, I just can't afford another one.

Up to two rentals per transaction. Rental is for one night only.

Deal breaker, especially where games are concerned, but even for movies that's too strict

If you have a Cineworld pass then clearly this is of little value to you. But we don't all live in Dublin.

Would be good for anyone who lives particularly close to an Xtra-vision so that they can go up and down to it each day if needed. For games to work though you'd need to able to renew your rental they next day.

Especially if you are getting two for the weekend.

If you're renting 2 movies you should get 2 nights. If renting a game you should get a week.

Add these 2 terms and its a winner all day long.

Not everyone can get to xtravision every day. For example my local xtravision is outside of the city so its a bit of a car journey in and out, so it would be a nuisance going in and out every day.

Would almost certainly have done this if they hadn't closed down the Leonard's Corner, Thomas St, and Ranelagh stores. Rathmines soon as well apparently. Ah well.

Fair dues to Xtravision, i have normally been knocking them for their prices but this is a great deal and hopefully will go towards strengthening the company and keeping those jobs in the remaining stores.

I will be using the deal. Cheers OP for pointing it out.

Spoke to guys in my local xtravison about the limit of 1 night - they said you could just ring them and tell them you want to keep another night and they would just put it through as new transaction.

Pity they didn't think about this sooner before shutting down lots of stores.

+1. Nutgrove store closing in 2 weeks also.
And the Rathgar store beside Superquinn closed also.

So where are they still open on the Southside?

Personally I think its a great deal especially if you live close to their stores. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

Sounds like a decent price for unlimited rentals so should start competing with netflix

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭Batesy

    Just signed up for mine.

While there I saw another customer take up the option and another renting a movie who'd already gone for it.

Seems like it's a hit. Hope it works out for them and they make it a regular deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

The one night thing is a big minus for me. It's rare I'd be in the mood or have the time to watch 2 films in 1 day. I think a lot of people are the same, hence why they changed a lot of their old deals to 2 nights.

If they made the changes suggested earlier, I would definitely sign up. One night is simply too short for a game. Having to ring every day to keep renewing it would get annoying very quickly.

Dungarvan store now closing. Anyone know just what stores they plan to keep?

I took up this offer the 5th Jul, and was told I could rent DVDs up until 1st Sept. And I even clarified at the time, "So I can rent unlimited DVDs (2 per night) up until the 1st Sept for €20??" "Yes!" I went in a couple of night ago and the girl tells me my offer has expired. Even though no mention what so ever it was only for 1 month at the time of taking it out. I live about 25 min drive from the nearst Xtravision store so I probably would not have taken up the offer if I had of known it was for only a month. I called the store where I originally taken up the deal and he admitted they had been given wrong information from head office and this was corrected a week or so later. They said they tried to contact all members who had been given this incorrect information..even though I rented 8 - 10 DVDs in the month following and no mention of incorrect information been given out....Anybody else given this incorrect information??

Phone call to the head office me thinks...

If they start that kinda messing they are doomed

The offer was quite clear in their instore promotional material and on their website and Facebook, what you claim you were offered is quite honestly too home to be true, perhaps you should have rang head office in early July to verify the offer. Didn't partake myself as i only rent about once a week, if even that often. Best of luck with your complaint, they might give you a unicorn.

It is pretty clear on their website:

"Offer is valid for 31 days from time of purchase. Purchase your Summer Family Pass before 31st July, 2013 to avail of this offer."

Up to you to read the terms really (imo).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 Trigger007

Yes I know 'buyer beware' and all that, but when you have the guy at the desk repeatedly telling you it's unlimited from now (5th jul) until 1st sept (to other people also), it's pretty hard to refuse that offer. There was no promotional material available at that point either so logging on to their website or calling head office to confirm, wasn't something that sprung to mind. Anyway, I guess I'll know next time :-(

They should bring back this offer once the evenings get longer if they have any marketing brain anyways

    +1

I spent a tremendous amount in sweets and rubbish for the kids while picking/dropping vids

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭Batesy

I rented 13 films in the 31 days. Great value for €20.

Found myself renting films I'd missed over the past year or so. Some great films that I'd probably not have gotten round to renting without the offer.

I'm not liking the look of my local store (Wicklow) over the past few weeks though. A lot of bare shelves and stock levels look to be dwindling. Hope it's not gearing up for a closure!

Jay-sus, took up the last offer and I felt like I watched every movie in the store!

Great deal if you have a store local to you and movies I didn't get time to watch I found there was no problem walking into the store and handing over the movie and saying that you wanted to rent it again, never tried it with games but I guess it'd be the same.

The rental selection in Blanch is dismal.

Unless it improves it wouldn't be worth my while. there isn't any old movies or a back catalogue to rent either.

Back catalogue is just taking up valuable selling space I'd imagine. Hanging onto rentals beyond say 12-18 months is a bit useless I'd imagine.

Where Xtravision were extremely bad were keeping 'new releases' at full price for around 12 months. They could have done much better if they had it like Chartbusters were their 'new releases' price was for I think 10 or 12 weeks with the lowered price plus as part of a 3 for 2 night €8 I think offer after than. And their back catalogue was pretty brutal in my local shop, virtually everything was on TV and I'd imagine not much renting of those was going on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

The rental section in Xtravision is only about 30 titles. Thats a very limited selection. Its probably only 5% of the shelf space in that store. Seems to be only a few of the most recent releases. Maybe they are just restocking.

No. I think its a change of direction. More selling and less rental space. Back catalogues were a waste of space anyway.

They've bumped up the price but you get a copy of a One Direction album, no matter who you are or what your listening /watching preferences are?

    What's the logic to that?

Its directed at getting a younger cohort of customers in the door who otherwise buy their music/entertainment online.

But why inflict it on everyone else? That CD will literally go in my bin, and the fiver would probably have been spent on high margin popcorn etc

I am not disagreeing with you. If they provided 3 or 4 choices that would be better in my book. But you and I are clearly not the one's that this offer is aimed at.
