    Not a big fan of twitter. Have an account but don't use it much. While it can be useful, the noise to signal ratio isn't great imo.

    Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    I have an account which I use regularly to keep up to date on football news across the continent mostly. I don't tweet very often though.

    Yes. Twitter is great - its a fantastic way to consume and share information and you are totally in control of what you want to see. If you follow people or brands etc that are interesting to you - you should see interesting comments, links and insights. If you had a go of twitter and did not like it, chances are you were not giving it a proper try or using it properly. Even some of the most techno phobic people I know use twitter as they may be e.g. sports mad and follow all the clubs and players that they like. Yes there is some rubbish on it but you can unfollow with one click. I always follow new people and unfollow those who I no longer like. Twitter has been responsible for many big news breaks and has helped a many in the recent world troubles.

    Interestingly I posted a therad about this with the exact same title about 4 years ago: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055534579 - it will be interesting to see the results of this one.

    I think the Bali bombings and the protests in Iran the other year first reached the Twitter feed before the mainstream got to it. So it can definitely act as a viable news outlet - a type of on-line citizen journalism; but of course, this also makes it susceptible to false stories.
    Only following 30 people.

    Precisely. ;)

    NO!

    I find the best use of twitter is in following interesting tweeters who "curate" the web and dish up interesting links on niche subjects you wouldn't necessarily find on your own.
    @brainpicker is probably the best of those .

    I never tweet myself and I've really no interest in following celebrities or ordinary people on it (sorry ordinary people!).

    I've never even seen twitter. Im not particularly interested in what people had for breakfast...same as facebook, I dont use that either.

    Im old and set in my ways :cool:

    Yep, whenever I'm online which is a lot.

    Great for networking, interacting with people in different parts of the world with similar interests, breaking news, and passing time when in work of course. I swore I'd never get into it back in the day but now it's fair to say I'm addicted.

    No. Don't see the point of twitter or facebook etc.

    I like to give out about everything and I like other people to see it. So, yes.

    Twitter is way less like that than Facebook, because inane, attention-seeking comments are quickly drowned out by all the other comments on people's feeds, so it doesn't hold much appeal for people who post for the sake of posting. It's fast-moving and constant. It has regular updates from media outlets, commentators, comedians, etc, so those are the tweets that will eclipse the pointless noise. It's like a ticker-tape.
    Plus, nobody has to follow anyone whose tweets they don't like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,023 ✭✭✭Fukuyama

    I do.

    Mostly try to use it for work/college related stuff. I'm trying to get into digital marketing so makes sense. But I really enjoy it to be honest.

    Facebook and Twitter are two different services altogether. I'm not on Facebook anymore. Got sick of it.

    The good thing about Twitter is that the relationship is one way. So you can simply not follow people even if they follow you.

    @DeanSherwin if anyone's interested :P

    Well by your own admission you don't even know what it is. :confused:
    I prefer to interact with real people
    Being on Twitter... interacting with real people... not mutually exclusive. People on Twitter are real people also.
    It's more reading than interacting anyway; not all that different to TV.

    Lot of cluelessness re Twitter. How can someone have an opinion on something they don't know about?

    more for info-finding rather than social networking.
    I find the best use of twitter is in following interesting tweeters who "curate" the web and dish up interesting links on niche subjects you wouldn't necessarily find on your own.

    As Whimsical and Femme_Fatale have pointed out, you don't really need to interact with anyone to still gain benefit from Twitter. Info and Fact finding Twitterers can find info and links you might not have otherwise found. Whimsical pointed to @brainpicker which is one of many of these, including:

    @UberFacts
    @historyweird
    @quizfactz
    @OMGFacts
    ...and thousands more, on general and specific subjects.

    So we need to recognise that Twitter is more than just RT celebrities and interacting with seemingly boring users who post pictures of their breakfast and such like.

    Yeah. I dont tweet much myself, my life isnt nearly action packed enough. But Ive seen interesting articles/videos/weird stuff/website sales and offers etc that probably wouldnt have come to my attention without it, so its handy to check the odd time.

    Yeah I have an account with a grand total of 5 followers. I do like it but the reason I don't use it is because not a lot of people I know are on it..and it's kind of weird having nobody to read what you tweet.

    Yeah I love twitter. I agree that its use is limited - I don't agree that it is a great democratizing force, nor that it reflects broad public opinion (a bit like AH doesn't). However, it's just a nice marketplace for ideas. You don't have to invest in anything, but it's a nice place to exchange and subscribe to the (sometimes) interesting ideas of a particular demographic.

    I generally find it pretty all right. Usually spend a bit of time on it, checking for news that most news channels simply don't cover.

    I'm not interested in Katie Hopkins trolling on ITV, which seems to be the biggest talking point of the past couple of days. Meanwhile 30 or so school kids were massacred in Nigeria.

    Only a handful of my friends are on it. Then again, I only had a handful of actual friends on Facebook while I was on it. The other couple of hundred were random people I happened to run into, be in the same class etc...

    Twitter is great for interacting with communities online (hobbies, fan groups, bands etc...), enjoying a bit of anonymous banter during a sports event or finding out whats happening.

    For example, the tweets from Tahrir square give the kind of on the ground coverage on Egypt that traditional media simply cannot.

    Run a couple of searches for things you're interested in and take it from there.

    It makes me feel better than facebook because it always seems like when you tweet something people see it, rather than facebook when you get no likes your status is a failure... That aspect of facebook has stopped me sharing anything bar things I find funny which I know others will find funny. Kind of like posting on YLYL, there's so much hilarious **** but if it has no boobs or jokes related to a tv show it gets no thanks.

    I'm bitter.

    Your tweet doesn't have to have anyone read it though
    Like a public diary- write sh!te for yourself
    I don't get the "retweet/favourite this please" culture that is on twitter

    Plus I used to be very anti-hastag, thought they were pointless- but they are acutally quite fun

    I tweet. Sometimes a rake of times a day and then only a few times a week. It depends on whats happening. Like, reading all the tweets during the Olympics was fun and some peolpe are really wittty online. I follow too many people though, I need to whittle 'em down. It's totally different to Facebook because you can continuously tweet and not pi$s people off, whereas more than one status update on Facebook is too much.

    I have two accounts, one for myself and I have been using it around 4 years and another account that I use for Fair City Fans account (along with a Facebook fanpage).

    Twitter is great for breaking news and brilliant for watching live TV and clicking the hashtags to see just what others are saying! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,438 ✭✭✭✭El Guapo!

    I have a twitter account.
    I just use it for mma news though and I don't actually tweet anything myself.

    I tweeted one thing to a UFC fighter and he retweeted it and replied to me. That's about it.

    Yip. Have thousands of views on my website directly from tweets also have got training materials and software gifted to me from fellow Tweeters. Read a tweet suggesting Bin Laden was captured and killed about 3 hours before it was announced.

    uhh, because it's lame?..I don't need to tweet to the world that I got a job or some latest piece of news.... >_>

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭Trebor176

    I've been using it around three years now. It's a great way to interact with those not just here, but overseas as well. There can be good banter, depending. The only things that would annoy me are hashtags for something like a program that I have absolutely no interest in. My feed can be clogged with them, but I can simply just 'mute' these ;) I have met a number of people from there as well.
