Just seen Verburg running in Paris there and checking the start lists I see there's no Americans in Gregan's event!

Good news for Gregan. Krasnov has to now be his biggest threat (though Amos can't be discounted)

Gregan won his heat in 46.68, 2nd fastest qualifier overall. 24 qualified, so we'll have 3 semis. He should qualify for the final handily.

She was eventually given third as Ajok from Uganda was later DQed for I assume breaking early meaning Everard qualified automatically and her time was actually the third fastest of all the qualifiers, though lots of the later heats were won at a kanter.

Amy Foster got second in her heat in 11.60 to go through automatically.

Not a great start (unusually) but came through well so hopefully more to come.

She equalled her PB of 11.49 at the Mary Peters Invitational last week.

Tomas Cotter in action in the next heat of the steeple. Will have a tough time with a very strong field in the heat

Edged for 5th in 8.53.30 but makes it through as fastest loser

Watched this last night, felt she kicked a little too early and ran herself out. Learning curve and better to do then than later

Amy Foster grabs second in her 100m SF to qualify for the final.

Seriously, can these athletes do no wrong over the last few days? No one knocked out yet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,762 ✭✭✭✭ecoli

Foster was lightning out of the blocks a great result for her

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭SitUbuSit

45.91 for Gregan. Wins his SF beating Krasnov.

Seriously...everyone is performing out of their skins out there! Delighted for the team.

    Great running from Gregan.

Looks like he runs extremely close to the line on the curve.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭SitUbuSit

Great run from Amy Foster, only 1/100 of a second off her PB finishing fifth in the 100m final in 11.50, in not fabulous conditions.

Well that 10k race was hilarious. The South African was just trolling them all for the race, weird way to run but fun to watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 886 ✭✭✭Caprica

Really enjoyed the Men's 10k. The South Africian guy is sub 28 at his best and Olympian. A very unusual way to run a race, run hard for a few laps, take a breather push on again. I think Gregan has a good shot in the 400. The Irish are performing well.

Overall the standard is a bit on the low side. Very impressed with all the facilities in Kazan, no shortage of cash in Russia.

Oliveira just pulled up in the 200 heats. Looked impressive throughtout the 400m rounds but looks to be suffering from dehydration. Could be a doubt for the final tonight?

Gregan in lane 3 with Krasnov on the outside in lane 8

2 more in action tonight and possibly our greatest medal hopes

Barr in action at 4.40 followed by Gregan at 5.20. Could be an exciting hour for Irish athletics

Gregan tied up alot in the final 100m. It looked like he was dragging the leg.

Fabulous race from Margarita Mukasheva of Kazakhstan with a National Record of 1.58.96.

She was so full of running going down the home straight.

Something like 0.32 seperated the first 5

Entertaining days action in Kazan. I thought Gregan was going to medal coming into the home straight but the other guys were stronger at the end. Very impressed with the womens 800 winner, very agressive running, she was not going to be bet. The mens 1500 was good as well, surprising to see a Russian winning. Surprising in the mens high jump that the Olympic champion (Ukhov) was only good enough for 5th with 2.28.

Running rounds in the 400m is very tough. Even though Gregan cruised through the heats and semis it still takes it's toll. He's had a good few races now, I hope he takes a couple of weeks off to train and refocus before going for the A-standard. If he keeps racing every week he'll be flogged by the time Moscow comes around.

The sensible thing would he for the AAI to guarantee him selection on his B standard, allow him to refocus and peak for Moscow. Far better for him to run the A in Moscow and make the semi than to go there burnt out from chasing the A and going out in the heats. Such info needs to be communicated well in advance. With so few track A standards from Irish athletes this year you'd be confident that sense will prevail, otherwise we could have a tiny team inside the stadium, which would hardly be good for the sport in Ireland.

If people see Irish athletes competing on television with the best in the world, it's surely going to have a positive effect on the sport at home.

The perception out there is that Irish athletes don't have a hope on the world stage, that has to be changed.

I people see Irish athletes winning medals on the world stage, that has a positive effect - that will create coverage. If people see Irish athletes qualifying for finals... some positive effect, but unless its the Olympics, how many people will even know about it.

Gregan going out at the semi-final stage rather than the first heat isn't going to change anything, nor is sending a larger group on B-standards so they can get knocked out in the heats. If anything, sending a larger, weaker group will reinforce the perception that Irish athletes are also-rans. Send 6 people and 4 make the semis - sounds like a decent return. Send 12 people and 8 of them are knocked out in their first race...?

Disagree totally with that, the more people that are sent this will improve the overall standard. People already within the sport will have a greater reason to improve. People new to the sport will see the reward for hard work. It's not all about getting joe public to get out running, and to be honest joe public who sits on a bar stool will prob not be watching the early rounds of the 400/800/1500 at the worlds.
It's kids that are down the club and see club members going to majors regardless of making finals. I don't know if there is any coaching or pay back from the carding system but it would be something that should be included. But a little bit of pr after even within clubs in the area would be great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

Do you think athletes with B standards should always be sent to the worlds/olympics/other internationals? It would be good for the athletes sent and their clubs, but I can't see it having any effect on the standard of competition or the profile of athletics, and it would be an expensive policy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,290 ✭✭✭Oregano_State

Look at it another way. The point has been made before that the B-standards should be used to bring young athletes with potential to the big events, to give them experience at the highest level. If athletes are exposed to occasions like this it will bring them on, expose them to the best the offer, and help them see what they need to do to bridge the gap between them and the champions.

I hope that we bring people on B standards, but it will have to be done fairly. Fairness seems to have been overlooked in some recent selections by the AAI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

I see the logic in that - send an under-23 with the B standard so they gain competition experience. On the other hand, that's what the World University Games, World Youth Champs, Euro under 23 champs... are for.
A policy of sending as many athletes as possible to every competition has its merits, but also costs.

If it wasn't down to just money I'd send everyone with a B standard that was below an age , ie anyone with a B standard under 23 goes, then the rest is up for selection. It's not like we have hundreds with B standards.
