Is this a "dodgy box"?

My dad's barber was telling him the other day about a satellite box (of some sort) that he has, he said he saw it advertised in a few local newspapers. He paid €100 for the service and €100 for the box and that's it. No monthly or annual fees and he gets all the tv/movie/sports stations, he said all he needs is a phone line to connect it to. He offered to get it in for my dad. Now obviously this sounds extremely dodgy. My dad would love to get one but I'd be wary of something like this because it sounds too good to be true and therefore must be illegal :P I was wondering if anybody here knows anything about this?

    How does card sharing work?

because its illegal you wont get much info here, try google.

basically 1 person has a paid for sky account, he then uses hacked boxes connected to his box via the internet to "share" this .

It can be done anywhere with a satellite dish and a decent internet connection. it's days are probably numbered now though.

As has been said already, this is illegal. Anyone asking for or giving advice will be banned.

I wonder if these card sharing boxes can update channel lists and frequencies automatically.

If not, one simple solution to kill them is to keep changing the frequencies the premium channels use. Normal Sky boxes can self update workout issue.

They run off servers which update, as far as I know you will see a message saying scrambled channel for a few seconds.

You know the rules about discussing this at this stage. The other thread is only open because it is (or is supposed to be) discussing what Sky can do against the threat and if it veers off that it will be closed too.
