Foot Pain..

I have been suffering a lot of pain along the outside of my left foot lately when cycling, It does not start until 8/10km into my cycle, gets worse throughout, and I am guessing it is because my left foot is swelling a little more than the right when heated up and starting to sweat.

Is there any safe way of widening the shoe by a cm or two without doing damage to it? Don`t particularly want to have to get a new pair with the cost of them.

    Thanks :)

A cm or two sounds like a lot. I'd say it depends on the shoe and the material that it's made of. Leather would probably be good to stretch while a synthetic would be less good, I'd imagine. Shoe trees might help with that, but I'm not sure if many of them have an adjustable width.

What kind of shoes? What kind of pedals?

It could be a case of just new supported insoles, or that the shoes aren't a good fit.

I've heard of people filling small plastic bags with water and putting them in their shoes and into the freezer, the water expands when it freezes and stretches the shoes, well that's what's meant to happen. Don't know how good it works.

There a pair of pearl izumi tri fly shoes, with shamino SPD pedals.

Is it possible cleat position could directly relate to a cause of foot pain?

I'd say it's the number one suspect behind your issue. You could also be tightening your shoes too much without realising it.

Definitely not tightening the shoe too much anyway. Today I had the strap completely undone and just barely hanging onto the adjoining velcro and it was still causing issues...

Just another thought...have you tried different socks? Slightly thicker if thinner soles may help.

you may find that the edge of the sole of the shoe is pressing into the side of your foot at that point, so its likely just caused by local pressure. A shoe mender may be able to soften the edge depending on what the material is, another option would be to get some chiropody felt (in chemist or Physio shop) this can be cut to shape the section that's sore and will or may take the pain away if its a pressure problem. It may also be that one foot is bigger than the other which is not so unusual and in that case maybe in future when buying shoes try a larger size.
