RocknRoll Half Marathon

    Hi All,
i don't see a thread on this so might as well get the ball rolling,
in my eagerness to sign up, i never noticed the start time 8:30

so for all us country folk travelling up, it might make sense to book accommodation the night before & as it's a bank holiday might even hang around for the after party..
if anyone would like to recommend a hotel for the night fairly close to the start?
The "headquarter hotels" on the rocknroll website are on the pricey end of the scale & it's not like i'll make the most of the breakfast.
Most are actually booked out so i'd like to get something sorted soon.
    http://ie.competitor.com/dublin

    thanks for any recommendations.

Have a look at Trivago.ie and sort by price. Should give you some ideas. You could stay in O'Donoghues pub for €60 a night! The Mespil is pretty close, at €89.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭jfh

O'Donoghues pub would be the 2nd night option. would bring back pleasant memories of my first marathon where i drank jameson for the night after my first marathon & had to go to work the following day.
maybe i'll postpone that till oct..
    the mespil looks the job
    thanks

Also, as far as I can tell, as per DCM Bank Holiday Monday, the early morning start is before the Dart and Dublin Bus service wake up (Luas should be running). So those of us in the 'burbs will need to drive / taxi in...

Anyone have a discount code for this race?

Wouldn't mind doing it, but €49 is a bit steep?

I think biking it over would be a good option. No stress with parking or getting out of town after the race. Takes care of the warm up aswell.

You need to be a member of AAI (i.e. join a club) to get the discount rate. €49 is too steep for me too. There's always the Longford hm or Phoenix park 10m 2 weeks later.

Due to it being the national half, I think there are quite a few on here giving it a go. I'll be doing it anyway but don't think I will be near PB shape for it though!

It's on so early I might not even wake up until after I cross the finish line! :)

What is this course like? Are there any serious climbs or is it fairly flat/fast?

    Course
Pretty flat til the park, then a drag for 2 miles to Castleknock roundabout followed by a mile of downhill and then a drag uphill and then a donwhill before exiting the Park. Flat til Chapelizod before joining the DCM route and an uphill undr the M4 towards Kilmainham. The remaining 3 miles to the finish are nice and flat.
Overall a few bumps and drags but nothing too serious.

    from the website

    Pacers
We’ve partnered with Elverys Sports to provide the Official Pace Team for the race. Experienced pacers will help you reach the finish line at your goal time. Pace Teams are FREE and open to all participants. On race day, look for the colored balloons that reflect your goal time: 1:30 (yellow), 1:40 (blue), 1:50 (green), 2:00 (red), 2:15 (pink), 2:30 (purple).

Might try go with the 1:40 pacers

Good to see that there are pacers available times above the 2 hr mark. The thought of becoming demoralized in the final few KM doesn’t seem so daunting now:)

That's amazing, so you don't have to pay to run after them? I'm astonished!! A lot of the US marathons have that rubbish.. Quote from Chicago Marathon website

"What is the cost to join a Nike Pace Team?
Running with a Nike Pace Team is free! Simply sign up at the Nike Pace Team booth on Friday or Saturday at the Bank of America Health & Fitness Expo."

    Amazeballs

Anyone know how many are going to running this. They seem to be advertising heavily which makes me think they may be short numbers.

Been thinking again about supporting runs like this and the marathon when there are so many charity runs about and better prices.

About 5500, I believe. Not sure how many they were hoping for.

The paddywhackery of the website is hilarious , the tshirt I'm sure will be the emeraldest of greens imaginable and I'm sure the expo will be full of smiling Californians wishing me a "great run", nevertheless I'm doing this for the convenience of a local half marathon , given recent posts on some poorly organised efforts here , achill , not enough water in Killarney etc. at least the yanks won't tolerate any of that crap... Still would prefer a good charity run next year same time ....

Ha. Obviously you haven't heard abou the water issues at the Las Vegas rocknroll.

    http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/dec/08/marathon/

Which led to a drop in numbers of 14,000 the following year. Oh the yanks won't tolerate any of that crap.

    http://m.lvsun.com/news/2012/dec/01/las-vegas-marathon-participation-down----not-becau/

The price increase for AAI members is taking the piss.

The promotion of this race is being done by an Irish firm. They also promoted the Samsung run and will be involved in the Grant Thornton 5k. Personally I think they do a great job in keeping the races they promote very much in the focus of the running public , so as far as marketing goes, they are doing a good job. And for the record one of our club members works for that firm , so it's got the input of a real runner.

Pain in backside that both myself and the wife have to attend the expo to collect our bibs packs. I can understand they want u to go to the expo for some impulse purchases but in fact I'll end up spending less time there now as we'll have to bring the kids also.

agree with you, i know it starts early at 8:30 but they should have some point of pick up that morning, else post out. a postage stamp isn't going to break the bank & they're getting sponsorship along with 49 euro entry fee so can afford it

Yea, my wife is on night shifts apart from the night before the race, so with both of us having to go in "with photo ID" in person is a real pain.
Next year I'll stick to a smaller, cheaper half I reckon...

Surely anyone can run on behalf of a charity in any road race whenever they want to, or do anything they want at any time on behalf of any charity. There's far too many charity road races around if you ask me and I don't see a hell of a lot of difference between charity and commercial events. Personally I think it's better to see proceeds going back into the sport as it does with many club events and even some of the bigger races. It has become mainstream to expect road races to fund charities and many hold the view that races shouldn't be held at all unless a charity was benefiting. Don't get me wrong, I am not against charities but how come the same expectation isn't held when it comes to every football match, hurling match, horse race or most other sporting events.

Whats the story for AAI athletes? Are we getting number posted out or do we attend the expo?

Take it we are all in the front corral for the race. No info anywhere as far as I can see.

From what I can see we still have to attend the expo, and we can't even get someone to collect our number as Photo ID is required. Complete farce and inconvenience to those outside of Dublin.

Definitely check your spam folder - I got my mail 25th July at 1am. It has a link to a confirmation sheet which had your race number. You need to bring a signed copy + photo ID to pick up your race pack.

If you don't have the info try this email address: rnrdublin@competitorgroup.com

I'd got a response on it as unfortunately I put in a marathon predicted finishing time rather than HM and needed to work out if I'll be able to change corral (which thankfully you can do at the expo).
