I always get a pain in my neck when I do ab crunches, it seems wrong?

I'm only doing the crunches on the advice of a gym instructor (not giving me personal training, just a show-around).

Any thoughts about what I'm doing wrong?

Are you doing sit up or ab crunches?? Anyway you're leading with your neck! Flex your neck (tuck your chin to your chest) & do the movement so you cant lead with your head! Also put your hands on your legs & slide them up to your kneecaps instead of having them by your head!
