Weakling wanting to start lifting - advice please

I'm not very strong at all - I really want to build strength but have never done any lifting of any kind at all.
I'd really like a manageable programme I could do at home that will make a noticeable difference in 3-6 months.
I have a gym membership but hate going and probably won't renew at the end of the year - hate the atmosphere of all gyms. I will go though if I'm told it's impossible to make progress with free weights.
Looking for any and all advice.
    Female, age 41, 5.5 and 148lb.
    Thanks in advance.

I'd be interested as well; have just completed C25K to build up some level of fitness and I'm interested now in building strength as well; I'm 5ft 3 and 147 llbs and I'm happy enough going to the gym but wouldnt have the first clue where to start when it comes to weights.

there are plenty of programs designed for absolute beginners of any age and gender.
One of the most popular is called http://startingstrength.com/

It is a book (available online or from amazon) and there are plenty of videos for it to help you learn the right technique.
In the videos you can often see the author coaching beginning men and women of all ages and conditions.

you can also get more information from a wiki page, http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/Starting_Strength_Wiki
take a read of that, consider buying the book and get a trainer who will supervise you as you begin.

there are many other systems available (strong lifts 5x5, westside etc) but this imho is the most accessible and "friendly2 way to start.

I'm doing a similar program, and I can very much recommend it, within weeks of beginning I feel healthier, stronger, more flexible lifting the free weights is easily the best decision I could have made.
Which ever you pick stick to it, be consistent and you won't look back

you hate gyms and want to start at home? I'd suggest looking into bodyweight training programmes to start with.

I finished C25K too and wanted to do a bodyweight training program I could do at home, with progression.

I've done quite a bit of research, and settled on the book "Body by You: The You Are Your Own Gym"
I read it yesterday and I'm going to start the program this weekend.
It's a bodyweight training program, and no special equipment is needed.

I recommend you have a read of the intro to the book on Amazon.
I'll report back to the thread once I start!
