Tomorrow People will take to the streets outside the Dail in silent protest, the theme is to bring a book and show your defiance.

I have to say i am very happy with the individuals that are out there, they represent me. Only for i have to work i would be there. But i suppose its my role to spread the word and allow anyone that can be there and know whats going on.

    Article from the Journal
A PROTEST WITH a difference is being planned for outside Leinster House tomorrow afternoon. Those attending are being asked to bring a book to reflect how they feel about what’s happening in the country. They’ll then stand “still and silent” at the gates of the Dáil to send a message to those inside.
The idea is inspired by the ‘standing people’ movement that began in Turkey’s Taksim Square last month. Initiated by a lone protester standing and staring for hours in an act of passive defiance – images of the protest soon began spreading on social media, and sparked similar demonstrations elsewhere.

What do you think of this?

Although it's silent they'll probably manage to talk about the weather somehow...

What a stupid form of protest.

So organise a counter-protest and let them know.

When you think about it this is the perfect protest for the average Irish person.

You know the type whos all mouth behind the scenes but when it really comes down to it sits there and says nothing....

Completely defeats the purpose of a protest, what exactly are they "protesting" against anyway?

I'll try to get in for this.

    - What book to bring? I've got a Zizek to read, Mason's Why its still kicking off, or I could read an oldie - Naomi Klein's books, Occupy.

Actually now that I think of it anyone got any good recommendations for books to read at this protest?

I think I might be going to this tomorrow. I didn't know I had to bring a book though. I might pick something up along the way in easons or something. I read up on the type of protest and how it started and where and I like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,136 ✭✭✭✭How Soon Is Now

Protests no matter what kind they are wont work in this country until a large number of people actually ****ing stand up and do something.

Giving out about it on here on the radio or on Facebook is as good as most people will give.

Theres no sense of unity in Ireland on serious issues so when i hear the constant giving out about the government and the banks etc i always say same thing..... Shut ****ing up or actually do something about it but no your just gonna sit there like everyone else :pac:

Its like most things if a large enough number of people stop doing something or turn against it they have to fix this problem one way or another.

Dole is given on a Friday. Children's Allowance is a Tuesday (I think).

Would I go? Yes, I probably would but I'm spending the day tomorrow in the college library filling out job applications for the UK and researching registration for New Zealand.

A silent protest outside the Dáil will probably be more lively than anything happening inside the place.

Why dont we invite along all the pensioners and the blue rinse brigade, when they come out in force they normally get what they want and fair play to them. Think all the rest of us are just all too afraid to make a fuss cos Enda and Co will send out the riot cop heavy mob. So yes, we just dont need the grief.

They should all bring childrens books to reflect their mentality.
Colouring books would also be acceptable.

Why not bring cakes to give to the nice people in the dail? Silent protest, wtf kind of a protest is that?

The OP doesn't say what they are protesting about. Protesting for the sake of protesting? Bloody idiots.

Snot flicking protest at DE, that's what's needed.

Go to twitter and facebook and do a search for it and you can read about it there.

There's also a lovely written piece on the journal.ie site although you may need to go looking for it because it's gone down the list because it was there since last night.

If someone creates a thread here on boards.ie, it should not be as a syphon to other sites. Make your point here OP or is it not one worth making?

I don't know about silent protests. Perhaps something more annoying?

Like maybe everyone brings a blackboard and agrees to scrape their nails down it for an hour every day ?

Or just sit there flicking through their mobile phone's choice of ring tones on maximum volume.

A long rendition of some off-key Sean Nós singing by a whole crowd of people?

    Something that really irritates!
