Does a SRAM 10 speed cassette need a 1mm spacer on a Shimano free hub? Got a new cassette (new on adverts.ie) and it came without a spacer. Have had problems recently on a new set of wheels and don't know if its because of the spacer issue or not.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I think the washer is required only if cassette is too close to spokes or the freehub is too wide for the casette lock ring to tighten it. If neither is an issue, I would leave the washer out...

If you have Mavic wheels then you need the spacer. There's a long history to it but the Mavic standard hub is wider than shimano wheels for example. I have an sram 10 speed on Mavic ksyrium elites with spacer.

So I don't need the spacer as it's a Shimano freehub?

Assuming that your wheels are not Mavic and you have a 10 speed hub then you don't need the spacer. You will know anyway as if you get it wrong then either the cassette will not be squeezed tight or in the other case then the lock ring won't fit on correctly.

I just recently replaced my ultegra 11.23 cassette with a sram 1070 11.28 and I did not need any spacers. This is on a mavic open pro.

I must say, and I've been meaning to post this. The new SRAM cassette (and the ultegra cassette is new as well) is very noticeably crisper and cleaner for gear changes and general running. It's a lovely thing so it is.

don't need the spacer on Ultegra hubs/Shimano freehub. it's a SRAM OG1070 11-27 cassette. Agree, they are a little bit smoother shifting than the Ultegra cassette.
