We have a huge screen at the back. It is 4m + high and 3m wide..well it will be when we bring the whole thing down to floor level-its 90cm off ground at moment in photo. I wanted a set of doors sliding like the ones attached, but window installer says that the frame of them wont take the weight of the screens above. I can only have french doors...
*Stamps foot* I really want the sliders. Is he broadly correct?

    edited: they will be upvc.

Yes . For very high sliders you will need to use aluminium framing.

    Thanks:)
The sliding doors will only be 78 inches..plus whatever frame. Its just that there.is all glass above them as well i.e. not just the doors and then a wall above but the whole wall is essentially a series of windows...

You have a nice view there which is worth spending a few euro extra on to frame it properly.

    Using sliding doors ;) right?!

Well yes the over-ridding idea being the slenderest frames possible. If you do this you will smile many times over for deciding to spend a little more.

    Not necessarily.

With most window systems, pvc, there are Aluminium couplers, to join windows together and windows to doors.

So it's possible to design a frame of Aluminium couplers, above, the Sliders, at both sides, etc, to give the screen weight bearing you need.

In addition if the Windows and Slider were reinforced, all would be screwed together.

Attached an image of one, the one I am thinking of is a Bone Coupler, bigger than this, but can't find an image

    I knew it

I spoke with him on the phone today. He said that he has placed the order and that he can't reverse it: and I think that this is more of an issue now than whether it is feasible or not.

What an expensive mistake by me, rushing into this. Seriously p.o'd.

when it comes to window manufacturers, especially upvc, i have experienced many discrepancies between what one will say can be done and with what other say cannot be done.

It always infuriates me when a client isnt willing to search for the company who can do what they want, and just ceed to the company who cannot.

its not a direct comment on you to be honest.
you can only take advice from the 'professionals' youve hired.

    did you ask your architect?

Why not, no window Co will rush off to make the windows, the day after the order is placed, has he paid a substantial deposit, or does he not want the hassle

That is what I said to my OH. He placed the order this a.m (firm order) - provisional order yesterday. There is no way they would go into production that quick, is there? Otherwise sure there would be a 3 day turnaround or something.

Sorry, whole build is getting on top of me. This is just one of a series of things. Expect more whingeing, moaning and rage from this corner over the coming months

:D Here goes. Will be in a right mess now if he turns out to be right in terms of the windows sagging or something. GAAAAHHHHH :pac::eek::pac:

Going to make a lot of friends with this project. I can tell. :o

If he got a delivery date of say 2 weeks time, windows will be made 2 days before the delivery, Glass units have to be ordered, and delivered to window manuf, no problem cancelling if ordered today.

have you no architect working on this for you, to tell you (or at least find out) what is feasible and what is not?

you should demand what you want... find out how expensive it is to do, and if its too expensive, then and only then, should you compromise
