Personally, I preferred the simplicity of the old site. I liked the way you could see all the story headlines on one page. It was one of the main features I liked over the rte website.

I have to agree, the old one was a lot easier to read

What is it recently with news websites' obsession with filling their homepage with more and bigger images?

Are we too dumb to read text these days?

Basically, the (latest) conventional wisdom of web design is to have one site for all, rather than different sites to suit different devices (e.g. a mobile sub-site).*

That being said, not all devices are considered equal and many news orgs are keen to ensure that their site looks well on tablets (partly due to them being the 'in' device at the moment, but also because some see them as the news' salvation and want to be on the bus).

Big images, done well, look nice on tablets and are also a lot more click-friendly than fiddly little text links (doubly so for those using smartphones).

So that's why we're seeing a lot of big images on news sites lately.

That's the reason why this site is also "responsive", where the layout adapts to the browser being used making it, in theory, suitable to smartphones and desktops alike.

Yeah; the offer of customisation is a good way to get over the fact that tablet-friendly and desktop-friendly design does not always overlap.

In a lot of cases where it's absent, I'd imagine it's seen as an unworthy expense (again, this goes back to many news orgs thinking they have to cater to tablets above all else).

it is now 12.05 am, monday morning, there is no mention of the lenstier hurling final between dublin and galway, no wonder crosbie holdings are struggling.

Its an editorial decision - the Dubs match is #7 story in sport this morning.

Down and Derry get a #5! A county making it after 52 years, i'd suggest, should be better placed.

But then again its a regional news group masquerading as a national news organisation.

I prefered the old layout too, but as everything is changing these days, i'll get used to it.
