What is the treatment for a cracked tooth?

I think I've cracked a molar on the top left. I can feel a bit missing and I get sharp, sudden pain when I chew on bread or potatoes etc. I've never had a filling or anything except getting my wisdom teeth out. I grind my teeth and have worn my front teeth a bit so I'm guessing this caused the crack. I am seeing my dentist on Wednesday and was wondering what the typical treatment for this would be. Filling, root canal? I have a medical card but understand I would only be covered for an amalgam filling. Can I pay the difference to get a composite filling? If it's allowed, could someone give me an idea of costs, so I'll know in advance if I'll have to tell my dentist I can't afford it. Thanks.

I went to the dentist today. This morning I had no fillings and now I have two :(. The fillings are in my top left second molar and bottom left premolar. As I have a medical card, he did amalgam fillings. I was nervous and forgot to ask and didn't realise till I looked at them in the car. I don't mind the the top one so much but I want the one in my bottom premolar changed because it's noticeable. Can this be done purely for cosmetic reasons? Will it damage my tooth? I grind my teeth and sometimes (well regularly) forget my mouth guard. Is a composite filling a bad idea in teeth grinders? Any idea of cost? Replies appreciated.

Amalgalm fillings are usually better in molar teeth as they have more pressure on them and Amalgalm is stronger and lasts longer.
For the premolar if its a small filling you could get a composite filling instead of the metal .

Hopefully the fillings will solve the pain issues .

Thanks. I'll leave the molar and will get the premolar one changed in the coming months. Had no idea I had a cavity there and I'm not sure if it's small as I've nothing to compare it to. I've caught myself grinding against it a couple of times already. Molar feels better though.
