    Hi,

I have a car which has been off the road since August of last year. With this new law will I have to pay the arrears on it when I intend to tax it in a month or two?

    Thanks

    Two no, three yes...

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I have a car off the road since Nov '11 but hope to have it on the road in August/Sept. I rang the tax office and was told I'd have to fill out the old form 100A as if I was taxing the car today, get the Guard to sign it, then fill out the new form FA 150 and declare it off the road for the minimum period and send both forms together to the tax office.

No.....there is a 3 month transition period, so long as you get it done before 1st Oct

I imagine the 3 month transition period will cover you, but you need inform them anyway.

you mean you got a definitive answer from the horses mouth instead of 100 different opinions from total strangers on Boards? :-)

(In your case, all you need do in fact is tax it in Aug/sept in the usual way with a Gard "signing off" the arrears. It's only really if the car would still be off the road after september that you need the FA150. (Opinion of a total stranger)

Mines been off the road for 4 years. Was going to do re-do the tax this year anyway. Is there a max amount of times you can declare it off the road? It won't be used from Nov - Feb every year.

A Garda will take a long look at you if you swear blind that the car was unused for a year/two years etc, when he can easily establish that the car was insured for this time frame. Now I know that letting a policy lapse/cancelling it/ can mean that you will not perhaps be able to get a new policy with the same benefits, but you will have an uphill struggle to convince him you were not spinning around untaxed .

That's a silly comment to be honest. I keep my car insured on my property, but unused. Why? Lack of tax does not prevent fires. Would-be-joyriders don't decide to take cars because they're not taxed. I keep my car insured incase anything happens. Yes, mine's a classic, so it's automatically comprehensive, but if it wasn't, it'd be third party fire and theft.

I've three other cars that won't be seeing the road for a long time so that's why I rang. I hope to have my Laguna back on the road in Aug/Sept but the way things are going at the moment I always seem to be doing stuff for others and my owns jobs get pushed to the side :( .

garda only witnesses signature, unless he has proof it was used -e.g caught speeding he can do nothing.

    Hi,

I went to tax the car today. Had the Garda signature to confirm it was off the road until the end of September. Wanted to tax it from the start of this month for 3 months and was told I'd have to pay the back tax.

Please tell me the tax office is in error!

    No they are not.
You asked the original question in July when you still could have done it.
    Now it's too late.

If you want to tax this vehicle yourself you will have to pay arrears.
Other option is selling to someone else, because if new owner taxes it, there's no arrears due.

What forms did you go in with and what date was on the off-road declaration?

    Nope, they were correct.

You had to have your form in by 1st October, after that you must pay the arrears.
