A friend of mine was looking into bringing in a trailer from abroad but someone told him he would have to pay vrt as the particular trailer has a chassis no. I would assume that if this were the case seeing as the reg on the trailer is the same as the one on the car this could not be enforced, does anybody know if this is true or not?

You're the second person lately I've come across asking this.......where is this misinformation coming from ?

There's no VRT. However, if it's new, it does need type approval and a cert to match.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

No vrt on trailers. Talking as someone who bought one in Coleraine and brought it down

    Tell you what though....
They are technically wheeled instruments for the road. And we do have a strapped revenue kitty....I wouldn't be at all surprised if Vrt, Taxation and NCT systems were set up for trailers!!

Very difficult to enforce tho would you not think but to be fair there are a lot of trailers out there in the pre ifor Williams mold that are death traps!

With the new laws on type approval coming into effect, I could see something happening down the line regarding testing on trailers.

How many heaps of junk have you seen being dragged around the place overloaded on tyres worn down to the canvas? And with the lights not working?

In fairness, Ive lost count of the amount of four wheel trailers, (worst of all was a car transporter) with only three wheels attached! A relitive lost a radiator when a tailgate decided to jump off its trailer and fight it. The hinges were still attached, they had rotted off the frame. But lights do annoy me. If theyre not all half lit at once, theyre not on at all!

Not really. Require the trailer to have a disk on display similar to a car, or perhaps require the driver to have it with them in the car. It's a simple matter then for a Garda to ask for evidence that the trailer is tested if they pull you over.

I agree that there's a huge amount of really dodgy trailers out there, and what's nearly as bad, there's a lot of very good trailers out there in poor condition - especially lighting.

As my name suggests, i'm a bit anal about towing trailers, and my two are spot on. Trailer testing should be a requirement, however I fear that the RSA would over charge & under resource. Most likely lump extra pressure on VTN garages. It would also be likely that it would only apply to larger trailers, ie; over 750kg gvw. This would mean that a lot of the single axle scrap made of old kitchen tables and a caravan axle would still be out there.
