Getting a second opinion?

    Hey

I was recently diagnosed with cancer and have had surgery twice in the last few months, am on medication and am being monitored closely by my consultant. He feels medication isn't working from a recent scan, because of this, I will need more serious surgery that I was hoping to avoid.

I'm wondering about getting a second opinion. What are the procedures, as in paper work, test results, scan/ xray results. Can I get a copy of them to bring with me when getting a second opinon.

I'm a little on the nervous side asking my consultant for this information, because, while I do trust him I need to be 100% sure that there is no other option for treatment, I'm afraid I will insult or annoy him.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Would you ask the consultant himself to refer you? Can't see that it would be an issue ,especially in a case of serious illness.

Maybe I'm being to sensitive, but I would be concerned it would look like I'm undermining him. Also, I was thinking would it be best to get somebody that has no connection with him so there would be no loyalty to agree with him etc.

Again, I'm more than likely thinking too much about it, I just don't want him to be pi$$ed off with me seens as I'll more than likely being seeing a lot of him for the next while.

    Thank you for your reply

You should absolutely seek a second opinion. Do not worry about offending him. You are the patient and deserve the best treatment plan available.

While he may not be super enthusiastic about the prospect, I think if you approach the subject in a nice and polite way there should be no problem.

Also I think it would be helpful to arrange a second opinion from somebody unconnected with your current doctor.

If you can make contact with another consultant and arrange an appointment, your current consultant should be able to arrange to send on a copy of your medical files. As far as I know it really shouldn't be too difficult.
